Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Teething Question

DD is cutting teeth, her two front bottom ones are both coming in together.  I have been giving baby tylenol for the past couple nights to reduce the slight temp that she has and the aches.  Last night though, she had a really hard time.  Woke up quite a few times, which is TOTALLY unlike her (she sleeps like a champ).  I'm anticipating another rough night since she was pretty cranky today.  I gave her some baby oragel today to numb things up a bit and it seemed to work for awhile, however, I'm wondering if it's okay to give it to her if she wakes up and isn't able to get back to sleep tonight.  Is there anything else that you did to help your LO sleep while teething?

Also, and completely random...(I could get flamed but here goes...) I have had quite a few older people telling me that they used to put their finger in some Jack or whisky and then just rub it on the babys gums to soothe the aches...has anyone ever tried this?  Does it work?  I will be honest and say that I don't think I'd ever try it b/c I'm super paranoid, but I just wanted to see if any "real life mothers" have done this recently or if its just something they used to do back in the day and if its worked.

 TIA for your help.

Re: Teething Question

  • we recently went thru the same thing and the pedi recommended Motrin instead of Tylenol. It worked wonderfully!!! it seems to be stronger, and work for longer.

  • My DS is teething too, and like your DD is waking (normally sleeps through the night). I've been leaving him in there to see if he'll go back to sleep--has a couple of times--but if I have to get him I don't talk to him or give him a bottle. Orajel doesn't work for him--he hates it. Hyland's Teething Tablets work GREAT...he takes them like they're candy, and he can't overdose on them since they're homeopathic.

I've had a couple of random ppl suggest the whiskey/jack trick as well, but like you I'm too paranoid to try it. Not only is it dangerous that it might kill them, but I've heard that it will give them a pre-disposed taste to alcohol.

  • I would just keep giving the Tylenol right before bedtime...and I would never try JD.
  • My Mom tried telling me the whiskey thing but I didn't listen and will not be trying that.

Have you tried the teething tablets?  Orajel just didn't cut it for our son.  We tried the teething tablets and they worked almost immediately.  He now has 10 teeth and is cutting another one.  Usually the only time we know he's teething now is when we notice his cheeks are bright red.

I'm sorry she's been getting up a lot!  It will pass.

  • It should be OK to give Orajel and tylenol.  I don't know how long the orajel actually lasts, because it probably washes right off with all the drool, but it may be just enough for them to get comfortable and fall back to sleep.
  • What are the teething tablets and where do I find them?

And that is EXACTLY why I don't want to try the alcohol thing, b/c of the danger factor of it...but again, I'm super paranoid.  It might work for some...

  • look in the vitamin section at your walmart--mine were on the VERY bottom shelf.  Google Images "hylands teething tablets" to see what the box looks like. I think they were like $5 or so--there's alot in there. You can give 2-3 at a time, I've given up to 4 at a time.

We found ours in Target near the Orajel.

  • Oh, and they look like teeny tiny baby aspirins.  But they're some homeopathic teething tablets that dissolve in their mouths.
  • motrin works much better in my opinion. tylenol wears off pretty quickly.
