Anyone ever have a problem w/ heated dry

on the dishwasher causes glasses to shatter??  We've had three different types of glasses, the latest being one of my fave pricey ones just shattering randomly!  All I can think of is that maybe the heated dry feature on our dishwasher is causing this to happen??  This is the first that DH and I have ever had a dishwasher since we've been married and we've never had this problem.

Re: Anyone ever have a problem w/ heated dry

  • I use heated dry on my dishwasher every time and I've never had a glass shatter on me. I've used a couple of different dishwashers too.

  • Our dishwasher gets really hot and has caused our plates/bowls to chip super easy. We've had them for a few years and never a single chip until this new house. Now if two plates even look at each other one throws a piece of itself on the floor.
  • Weird! We have heated dry and this hasn't every happened.

  • DH was just drinking out of one and it happened.  I'm so glad he didn't get hurt!  But there was orange juice all over the sofa and carpet.  I may have to start hand drying them because this is ridiculous!

  • Are you putting cold liquid into hot glasses?  That will make them crack.

Ohh, I thought you meant while it was IN the dishwasher, not like Exorcist style. That being said, the properties of glass can withstand intense heat. The silica doesn't even melt until like 2500 degree. I guess it's possible that repeated heat/cold cycling could make it more fragile.

Yes, yes you do!!  Haha  OH  I wonder if it matters that they were all "hand blown" (why does that sound dirty all of the sudden??) glass....  ??  And yes, it was quite "exorcist" style.  haha!

And no, the glass wasn't hot when he used it.  They've been in the cabinet all day!

My Dad owns a glass gallery, so I'm a nerd by proxy. Handmade glass is definitely more sensitive and not recommended for dishwasher use (at least all glass that I've seen). So handwash/dry. Boo.

GODblessAmerica!  Most of my glassware is handmade from this little boutiquey place in town.  LOVE it but it totally sucks they didn't tell me no dishwasher!  And I hate washing dishes.
