Baby Names

Girl Name Help- I'm 35 weeks!

We love the name Olivia, but then got stuck on Olive because Olivia is so popular in our area.  We now refer to her as Olive, but both sets of grandparents HATE it (wish we never let on what names we were thinking about).  What do you think of Olive Diana Gah-ret (our last name sounds like this, but has a French spelling).

The only other name we have agreed on is Vivian Diana, which has some family significance, but we would love to get some other suggestions!

We don't have to do Diana, although it is my mother's maiden name and my middle name.  Do you like Vivian Olive?

Your opinions please and thank you!

  • I LOVE Vivian Diana.... Not too keen on Olive, although its not as bad as a middle name. Go with what you love, regardless of the grandparents prefrence

  • I really dislike Olive and Vivian, they are so old lady to me.

    I agree

  • Oh, and, yes, Olivia IS popular but it's also pretty. If you really love it, you should use it.
  • Love Vivian Diana.
    Sadie is not impressed.

  • I LOVE Vivian Olive or Vivian Olivia.  I am not too keen on the name Diana ... reminds me of all of our mothers.  Vivian is a classic name and it's not old lady at all.

    Ditto this exactly.

  • I like Olive Diana! And in the end, they'll like the name once it's attached to a child.

I think Vivian Olive has too many V's and I's.

  • i llike Olive too!

PS my mom and sister hated all the names I was considering, especially Maeve! She said it sounded like an old lady and nobody would know how to pronounce it. The morniing after she saw the baby for the first time, she emailed me and said that she loved the name. So....if you love it, go for it.

    This cracked me up!!

Thanks for the opinions and advice everyone!

And BTW... love the name Maeve.

  • I couldn't name my child after a cocktail snack, no offense.  I do love Olivia though and I understand your struggle with the popularity.  I think Vivian Diane is nice, though I like Diana better.

  • I love both Olive Diana and Vivian Diana!!!

Diana is my favorite name of all time, so classic and elegant -

    great choices!!

  • I prefer Vivian.  Vivian Olive and Vivian Diana sound good,, but I think Vivian Olive sounds better.
  • i love olive, vivian, and diana!  all great choices.  in the end you have to ignore your parents opinions and go with what you like best.  i know that everyone really despises a lot of my choices but in the end they will come around when they see the adorable baby!!

  • All great names.  Olive is awesome.  It's adorable but not cute-sy.  It think it sounds kind of spunky.  I'm always looking for names that are rarely used but not unusual and this is it.  It doesn't sound 'made up' or look mis-spelled, but still sounds unique.
  • It wouldn't be a stretch at all to name her Olivia and use Olive as a nickname.
  • Vivian Olivia is too much "iv" sound to me.  Vivian Olive is much better.

I like Olive, Vivian, Diana, and Olivia--you have a lot of good possible combos there.  I love "older" names making a comeback, so Vivian Olive or Olive Diana would get my vote!

  • I love the name Olivia....but I also like Vivian.  I like old fashioned names, though.  I would LOVE to have a Vivian and call her Vivi (like veevee).  So cute.  I prefer Vivian Olive to Vivian Olivia.  But also love Olivia Diane.

ditto.  i'm with PP and the grandparents olive = No

i like olivia the best.  so long as you are not surrounded by olivias...i say use it!

vivian is pretty too.  other suggestions:

    evelyn, camille, simone, monica, veronica.

  • REALLY dislike Olive. It's a food! Vivian is NMS. I do really like Olivia and Diana, though not together. Have you considered Diana as a first name? One of my best friends (mid-20s) is named this, and I love her name.

  • I think Olive is precious.  I teach twin girls and their names are Ellie and Olive.  Too cute.

If you and your DH love Olive.  Go with Olive.

Vivian is also beautiful name and you can't go wrong with that.

     good luck.

  • Sorry but if you named her Olive, she'd get made fun of later on!
  • Thanks for your help everyone!!  I took a tally and it seems like the fave was Vivian Olive, followed closely by Vivian Diana.  But it was also nice to hear that some people love the name Olive, and some people that don't even like the name think we should go for it if it makes us happy.

I think I am going to try calling her Vivian for a day (when she is still inside, of course) and see how it goes!

Does everyone else find this an excrutiatingly hard decision?
