Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I need some BF encouragement..

My DD does not have a good latch and she gets frustrated and upset.  Once in a blue moon she will latch on quickly and have a great feeding session.. but most of the time she gets herself worked up bc she tries so hard to find me.  I hate hearing her little cry and I feel so bad that she is hungry but has to work so hard to eat..

I took a breastfeeding class, spoke to a couple LC's while at the hospital, read books and articles about BFing.... I feel like I know all the right ways to do it but it's not working as well as I would like.  Someone please tell me it gets easier?!?!

  • it does get easier, i promise!!! have you tried making a "nipple sandwich"? my lc had me pinch my areola so that more of it would fit in her mouth, and then she would adjust to what she needed, good luck! and it will get better!!!

  • It gets easier!  Promise.  Just keep trying, she will grow up very quickly.
  • Both you and LO will get the hang of it soon, just keep practicing. It does get easier with time.
  • I know there are a lot against this, but we are using a nipple guard and it's working REALLY well (plus, it helps me with the pain).  He has something MORE to grab on to and aim for and we've had great luck.  He still gets all the milk he needs and it's easier for both of us.  We are going to start weaning away very soon but for now, it's working.  Just another idea...my LC at the hospital recommended it.
  • It does get easier.  I second the 'nipple sandwich' technique.  In the hospital they had me using a shield which was annoying, but when we got home I started putting him on the breast sandwiching the aerola and he does great like that - sometimes I just do it in the beginning when he latches and he can stay on, other times I hold it like that for a little while until my breast is a little less full.  As they get a little bigger and in more control of themselves, latching definitely gets easier and easier.

  • It gets better!  Can you see a LC at all?  Maybe they can help with the latch?  I watched bf'ing videos online and that helped.  Agreed with pp-the smushing your boob so that she can latch easier.

Oh, and again....IT GETS SOOOO MUCH BETTER, I promise!

  • I had the same problem until this morning believe it or not! I spent several minutes on the phone with my hospitals LC. I told her that DD gets so frustrated and starts like snorting and carrying on. She suggested the nipple sandwich and expressing a little milk onto nipple so she can at least taste that its there and not get so frustrated. It has worked miracles for us!
  • DS did not start out with a good latch, but it got better with time.  It gets a lot easier and so much better.  I never heard of the "nipple sandwich" but I wish I had.  It probably would have relieved my nipples months ago!
  • Hang in there! It does get better, I promise :) It sounds like you're doing all the right things, it just takes time. I felt like giving in the first 2 weeks, but suddenly we got the hang of it & have been doing great ever sincce. Best of luck!

This works great for me.  My LO was so worked up that he wouldn't latch.  The LC suggested expressing breast milk or using pumped milk to tease them and then he latched great!

  • It definitely gets easier. I had the worst time bf'ing in the beginning! But thanks to persistence, annoyance at myself for wanting to give up, great LCs, the Brest Friend and a nursing stool, I am still BF'ing six months later!
