Shortened Cervix anyone...

Hello ladies. I just left my big U/S appointment. They said my cervix was short and sent me to the Dr. It measured at 2.5. I am currently 21.5 weeks. They will monitor me every two weeks before he decides on shots and bed rest. No more exercise or sex. Any advice or words of wisdom?

TIA

Re: Shortened Cervix anyone...

  • I would say just do whatever the doctors say, because you want to make sure you keep the baby in as long as possible!  Also, no matter what they decide to do, just remember that it is all for your baby's health and take one day at a time.

I was put on bedrest at 23wks, and I am currently still on a "modified" rest, due to cervical funnelling and possible shortening.  I was having weekly cervical length US up until 28wks.  I have a home health nurse give me 17P shots weekly, and had betamethasone injections at 24wks.  All to keep the baby cookin'!  Now i'm 31wks and doing well.  I'm up and about a little more now and am waiting to see what the OB says at my appointment tomorrow.  If it turns out that things progress with you and you end up on bedrest...this is the perfect board to keep you busy throughout the day.  Lots of ladies with similar situations and lots of good advice.

     Welcome, and GL!

  • I just went through this, so yes!

Taking it easy does work! At my last appointment a week ago, we were alarmed to find that my cervix went from 4 to 2 in less than a week. I was put on strict bed rest and, to my surprise, I went in this week and it had gone back up to 3. I am now on "modified bed rest".

This doesn't happen in every case, according to my doctor, but it is well worth taking it easy. Sometimes the outcomes are different if you are having contractions, have a positive FFN, etc.

Try to stay off your feet as much as possible; it may do a lot of good and reverse the shortening!! Bed rest STINKS, but I feel its worth the agony if I can keep my babies in for the remainder of the pregnancy.

     Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies. I will absolutely do whatever the doctor says for my LO. It's always nice to hear the opinion of other women dealing with the same thing. Plus, it's good to to get the positive stories and feedback. Thinking good thoughts and prayers for all of us.

  • I also have a shortened cervix.  Went from 3.9 cm down to 2.03 cm in 2 weeks, & no change at last appointment.  I ditto what everyone else has said & can only add to drink lots of water.  Mine did grow to 3.9 after 1 week of bedrest at 22 weeks and P17 shots, but I've been on modified bedrest since 25 weeks and it hasn't grown again.  So, I've decided to really just lay down as much humanly possible.  Best of luck!

  • Just really take it easy and listen to your body. I had a short cervix with DS, which they didn't find until 23 weeks and had an emergent cerclage placed. I was on bedrest until 37 weeks. It was horrible, but really the best thing for the baby, I made it to 38 weeks!

This week I had a cerclage placed at 14 weeks and they are measuring my cervix every 2 weeks...my cervical length is great, but I am still taking it VERY easy even though I am not on bedrest. Good luck!
