High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone on Procardia?

Hi, I was prescribed Procardia after ending up in L&D with preterm contractions twice in the past week. I'm supposed to take it every 6 hours, until 37 weeks. Just wondering if there's anyone else here who's on it and what their experience has been. Thanks :o)

Re: Anyone on Procardia?

  • I was on it from 24wk to 34wk and delivered at 36wk. I continued to contract on it even with the max dose but we still did it as a precautionary measure. GL!

  • I'm on procardia right now for preterm labor.  I take 20mg every 6 hours.  I've been on it since 23 weeks but my dosage was just increased to this about a week ago.

I think it's awful, but is apparently better than the alternatives.  After a week of this high dosage, the side effects are getting better, but I still get really flushed (my arms look like I have a sunburn) and I feel weak for a little while after taking it, almost like having the flu.  The headaches have gotten better.  I also notice that I feel the contractions in my back about an hour before time for my next dose.  My peri said that once contractions start there is no way to stop them, the procardia just tries to keep them at bay.

    Hope that helps!

  • I was on Procardia for my first pregnancy (preterm labor) and was also put on it this time for preterm.  The first time, I had some side effects - flushing, headaches, and overall just feeling kinda crummy on it.  This time around, I had the same side effects, but a week later I broke out in a rash.  The OB told me I had developed an allergy.  Once I went off it the first time, I didn't go into labor and ended up being induced at 39 weeks.  This time when I stopped the meds, I really didn't get any more contractions, so I'm not sure if it really helped me or not.

  • I was on it for a few days (they wanted to see if it helped with the horrible migraines I have been having) and it helped with the headaches but apparently I was allergic to it. It got really bad to the point where I had hives and couldn't really breathe well on it. So needless to say I'm off it now.
  • I'm on it three times a day 10mg for uterine irritability/pre-term ctx. Like the pp said it makes me feel like crap for about an hour - two hours after I take it. I get red, my legs get itchy and swollen, my heart races and I get short of breath because of it and I get weak feeling. But after a couple of hours that goes away and so did the ctx after I started taking it.

Actually aside from the crummy side effects I feel like a whole new person. No more painful pressure in my back and hips, and no more cramps. So wonderful! It was like swapping out for the lesser or two evils.  I'll do whatever it takes to keep him cookin for a bit!
