Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Concerned DS doesn't eat a lot - anyone else?

DS will be a year old on Sunday and I'm concerned about his nutrition. We BF and FF (because his tummy was too sensitive for EBFing) and he takes anywhere between 15-24 oz. of formula a day, and that's offering a 6 oz. bottle every 3-4 hours, most of the time him only taking 3-4 oz., even when its his first bottle of the day and you'd think he'd drink a lot not having anything since his evening bottle. He's still eating mostly purees (other than puffs, some fruit in the mesh feeder and a few pieces of broken up mini pancakes/waffles. And even at that, some days he'll only eat a few bites of a puree for breakfast and then be done, and some days isn't that interested in more than a few bites for lunch.

I just get concerned that at almost a year old, he should be eating a lot more. I've talked to his pediatrician at a few recent appointments and they aren't concerned because his height & weight are proportionate and he's not losing weight. But, I'm concerned that he's not eating enough for his age and that he keeps dropping percentiles (use to be in the 75th percentile for weight and was in the 33rd percentile at his last appointment.

Anyone else in (or went through) a similar situation? This is definitely something I'll be asking about again at his 1 year appointment.

  • Have you tried offering him more table foods? DS stopped eating purees when he could feed himself. He wouldn't take anything we tried to feed him because he wanted to do it. Maybe your DS is the same way? Good luck!

  • My DD wasn't eating much either- but we found out she has hypothyroidism, and that was contributing to her loss of appetite. She is just now back up to about 20oz of formula a day, and on a good day, she eats 2 containers of yogurt and a few bites of whatever we have. Before that, she was eating a few bites of food and 12-15oz of BM/F a day. I thought something was wrong even when she wasn't losing weight.

I'm sure he's just fine, but maybe at his 1 year, you can ask them to run some tests. He may just not be a big eater...even though my DD is being treated, she still doesn't eat much. I have to ask the pedi if we should take her off formula at a year- it doesn't seem like she's getting enough solids to sustain her, so I don't think I'm going to. What do you plan to do about that?

  • We've tried more table foods and with most he just spits them out or refuses them, other than puffs, fruit in the mesh feeder and a few bites of waffles/pancakes. I swear he would live on puffs if we let him, but he just gets a few as a snack. Puffs do not constitute a meal, ya know? He will not eat meat, other than in puree form, hates yogurt, etc.

The other thing is we have to be careful about what foods we offer him to because he suffers from severe constipation so he can't have certain foods at all, like apples, bananas, cheese, and then others in moderation like squash, bread, pasta, etc.

I have IBS and delayed gastric emptying so I plan to ask his pedi. at his 1 year appointment if maybe that could be a possibility. Although, maybe he's not a big eater? Either way, something I plan to talk to the pedi. about again.

And to the pp who asked, I do not plan on taking DS off formula right now. Like you, I don't feel like he eats enough to get the proper nutrition from his current solids diet, and until he starts eating enough to sustain him on solid foods alone, we'll keep him on formula, even if that means transitioning him to a step-up formula.

  • Obviously, this is coming from my own experience, and I don't want to alarm you or anything, but another of my DD's symptoms was really bad constipation- you may want to ask the pedi about his thyroid. It's not very common in babies, and I'm no doctor...I just would've never put the symptoms she had together (not eating much, sleepy a lot, dry skin, constipation...all symptoms of hypothyroidism).

Good luck- I hope you get something figured out. Let me know what the pedi says. PM me if you have any questions or anything.
