I haven't used a pad since I was about 13 so I have no idea what kind to buy. I feel like the big ones feel like diapers. I know they now make the Always Infinity pads that are supposed to be really thin, but hold a lot.
I right there with ya!! I bought the Infiniti ones because supposedly they're the thinnest and most absorbant, but they're stupid expensive. I dread having to wear the darn things!
I personally needed every bit of the thickness that the hospital pads provided. Unfortunate, but true. Those things were exactly what I needed. Once it wasn't AS bad, I switched to the overnight type pads that are super long, and have wings, for the extra coverage and peace of mind.
I have a pack of the Always Long Maximum something or other. I plan to use the hospital pads while in the hospital and then I think (hope!) they will be fine for at home.
Read my blog!
Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
I know that Always Infinity pads are stupid expensive, but I love them. They're soft on the outside and they're the only pads I've encountered that don't chafe. You're going to be wearing pads for a few weeks, the typical plastic funnel-y exterior coating gets old. They also really do hold a lot.
I have also swiped post-partum pads and supplies from the hospital. They are huge. They do feel kinda like diapers. But they get the job done. (Also, when my son was born, they had these combination ice pack/pad things - steal as many of those as you possibly can.)
You have to wear them after a LAP surgery too. After mine last fall, they sent me home with about 6 extras of the hospital grade (obviously, the bleeding doesn't last as long) and after I went through those, I just used some overnight Always something or other. It wasn't as bad as I expected. Other than that, I haven't worn them since about 14 either.

I used the always overnights. I think it's a purple package. Not only are they very absorbent, but they were not that uncomfortable. The hospital ones stunk they shifted and were bulky.
I had my baby last Friday. I have found that I really liked the hospital pads... they were more comfortable because they were bigger and thicker (like a pillow for your sore spots). Now that I am out of the hospital pads, I am using my Always Infinity pads. I like them okay... but I miss the thick pads... their on my shopping list for my next Wal-Mart trip.
I brought a pack of Always Thin Pads to the hospital with me. They came home with me unopened. There is absolutely NO freaking way they would have gotten the job done for the amount of bleeding there was.
I gratefully used the hospital pads, ice packs and other supplies that the nurses swiped for me for at least a week and a half. Then I switched to smaller ones. But trust me, you will need the hospitals for at least the first few days, possibly longer! I never expected it to be that much.

This is not a lie:
My MIL started buying me pads. BOUNDARIES, woman. LEARN THEM.
In the past few months, she has supplied me with over 800 Kotex super-duper absorbancy pads.
1) Did I mention how effing weird this is?
2) She thinks I will bleed for an effing year
I returned them to Walmart & bought diapers. & Always.
Mom, why are you washing my feed in the sink?!
This is hysterical! Of course, that's only because it didn't happen to me!
I like the Always Overnights for the first days after I get home.

I've never been able to use an Always brand pad; the plastic-y coating on them gives me a rash. Nasty. My mom has the same problem.
I generally use the Kotex ultra thing overnight long and plan on using those in addition to whatever I take home from the hospital.
