Gas drops vs. gripe water?

Has anyone had success with either?  We've been using Mylicon gas drops, but I don't know if they're helping.  DS seems to be having painful gas pains, but he passes gas A LOT, so I don't know if that is in fact the problem.  He eats like a champ - about 4 oz every 3 hours.  But sometimes he just seems like he's in pain when I'm trying to burp him.

Not sure if I should try the gripe water - I've read the gas drops only work on the gas in the stomach, not the intestinal gas.

Re: Gas drops vs. gripe water?

  • The difference between the two is that Mylicon which is Simethicone, turns all of the little gas bubble in the GI tract into larger bubbles which are easier to pass.  Gripe water soothes the GI tract with a cooling effect which makes it easier for LO to pass the gas.

Our pedi prefers the Simethicone over the Gripe water b/c of the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in the gripe water.  Are you giving the Mylicon before or after a feeding?  We were doing after and it didn't do anything, but once we started giving the drops before a feeding, it worked wonders.

Thank goodness DS grew out of the excessive gas...

  • I tried both, they didn't seem to help..... they didn't hurt, but I didn't see the results people said I would...... I am also Thanking God she outgrew her extreme gas
  • You can use both.  We had to around the same age as your LO.  It helped a little, but she eventually just grew out of it.  It was just a short little stage.
  • We use both and they both seem to work.  The difference for us is that sometimes we give her gripe water when she is extremely upset and/or colicky (not necessarily gas related) and whatever we are doing to soothe her isn't working.  It helps her calm down a little.
