Preemies

Developmental eval today

This is a C&P from another (off bump, non-preemie)board, so there are some over-explanations in it ya'll dont need. Just go with it.

For Robbie's state run therapy program, he has to have a full evaluation every year. That meant today the developmental therapist was here.

Robbie completely showed off for her. First, he LOVED her. I mean, he likes most people, but he BEAMED at her the whole time.

Then he did all these things I didn't even know he could do. He like... tried to stack blocks. WTF? Oh.. and he never wants to hold an object in both hands, and has NEVER banged them together. He held two objects the whole time and then when she showed him how to bang them together.. he did it. (I swear, I've showed him that a hundred times.)

She asked if he can pivot on his stomach. Nope. So she puts the blocks beside him and he promptly pivots and gets them. Alrighty, then.

Then she asks about rolling from back to stomach. I say that his PT and I both think he *CAN* but doesn't. So again, with the blocks.. the first time, she just barely poked him in the butt to help him get over, then the next time, he totally did it by himself. Apparently I don't know my child at all.

He did babble the whole time she was here, too, so she got to hear a lot of his sounds. She tried to get him to wave, but he just stared.

Anyway, in the end, she said he's about 11 1/2 months for cognitive skills, probably 10 1/2-11 1/2 on fine motor. Both "normal." (keeping in mind, he's 12 months adjusted)

Gross motor and language/communication were the shitty ones, both around 7m. She said he really seemed like he was at the cusp of an explosion, though. She thinks he might understand more than we think. And of course, a few minutes later, he was chewing on his paci and I said "can I have a bite?" and he handed me his paci. WTF? So she thinks that if she even came back and re-evaluated in a few weeks, he would probably score closer to 8 1/2 months.

She did think that in about 3 months, we should get a SLP eval and probably start speech therapy. And obviously keep going with PT.

We talked quite a bit. She asked about my concerns. I told her I worry more long term than immediate. Yeah, he'll walk and talk late, but I just want him to be fully functional later. She pretty much said that my concerns are warranted, but that he's doing great. She basically said he seems very smart, has great problem solving skills, he's just behind. But that given everything he's been through, she's very pleased how well he's doing.

She asked if I felt better and I said yes. I mean, obviously being behind in some areas sucks, but honestly, I was expecting him to be behind in MORE areas, so really, it went better than I anticipated.

  • Tricia, that is great!  I think we all worry about the long term stuff.  It's hard to take it day by day, but I think as preemie moms, we celebrate those milestones so much.  It makes it all the more special when our LOs do something new.  I am so so happy for you that Robbie is doing well!  And I LOL-ed that he was such a show off. :)

  • I'm glad that it went so well!  That's amazing that he did so many new things for the evaluator.  Now, I hope he continues to do them for you!
  • That is so great! Talk about having patience, huh?  It's amazing what these guys will do to show off for others but are so stubborn with us moms. :-)
  • it sounds like a great appt!!

  • Well HOT DAMN!  Go Robbie!

This is the Best. News. Ever!  I'm all weepy eyed with joy.  See, he really has been taking notes from C&E because this is the exact age and exact evaluation where things really started to turn around for us.  It is only going to get better from here on out.

    Wahoooo!!!

  • I swear to you guys, tonight he started clapping. Not 100%, and I have to make his hands do the motion first, then he repeats it, but he's totally doing it.

And we were playing tonight and he was completely getting his part. We were banging some pens together and he'd hand them to me to bang, then I'd hand them to him and he'd bang, then he'd hand them back.

I'm walking on air tonight, man. walking. on. air.

  • That's great news!! What a flirt!
