Funky Spelling?

DH has said he likes the name Claire (my top girls name), but thinks it should be spelled Clare (like the place in Ireland).  I think it looks like someone forgot the 'i' and she'll forever have people misspelling her name.

What do you think?  Claire or Clare?

Re: Funky Spelling?

  • I had a friend in high school who had this name and spelled it Clare, so it doesn't bother me. I think if I were to choose however I'd probably prefer Claire.

  • my sister's name is mary clare but it's because she is named after our family friend who is a nun. people always misspell it claire so you might want to go with that spelling.

  • WHo clares?  LOL!  It's 5 am and I am sleep deprived right now, so forgive me.

Spell it the way you want;  I like that it has meaning spelled as CLARE!

  • Clare is the spelling for the main character in The Time Traveler's Wife. I love the spelling.
  • I vote for Claire, but only because it's a little more international and if she choses to live anywhere non-English (Europe, for example), many people would have trouble pronouncing and spelling Clare.

That depends on where. In Spain and Portugal, I think Clare would probably be easier as it's closer to Clara.

I vote Clare. That's how I would have spelled it--a MN possibility for a girl (whom I'm never having--sigh). We spelled Colin with one L because it was "more common" but people misspell it Collin all of the time. I might have spelled it Collin but literally I wanted the more common spelling to make it easier. That hasn't proven to be the case.

Clare is not just the Irish spelling but the English spelling as well (as in the rest of the UK) and it definitely is my preference.

I know Claires and Clares IRL.

  • I've seen both.

  • they're both completely acceptable spellings.  i think that claire is the french and clare is the english/british spelling.  either is fine!  :)  think of how many different ways there are to spell christina/cristina/kristina!

  • They are both pretty common spellings, so I wouldn't think it's a big issue.  More often than not, people will forget the 'e' at the end anyway, so there's that issue as well.

  • I like Claire better, but either looks fine.  It's such a pretty name!

But Clare is a traditional way to spell it. In English-speaking countries, technically, it's the MORE traditional way.

  • i honestly think they're both fine, and i've known people with both spellings. i'm irish so clare doesn't look wrong to me at all.

  • Either way you go people will spell names wrong....but how many times will "these people" be spelling your child's name anyway?

    I like Clare better.

  • Claire.  Clare looks like it should rhyme with car.

    Really?

Do ware, hare, bare and share rhyme with car?

  • I love Claire, but Clare looks SO strange to me. I really don't like Clare.
