Flu Shot ?

My friend is not going to have her infant son (he's 4 months right now) get the flu shot b/c she says it is loaded with thimerasol (sp?), the preservative some say is linked to Autism. ?It freaked me out a little. ?Is this a true fact? ?And if it is, is it anything to be worried about? ?I've never really thought much about the flu shot in the past.

Re: Flu Shot ?

  • There is a thermisol free flu shot and it is usually (always?) given to children under 3.  You have to be at least 6 months to get the shot.

Thermisal has been said to be linked to autism by some groups.  Alot of the reasearch that started that has been disproven and even with thermisal removed from most vaccines autism is still rising.  I really don't think there is a link, but I always get DS the thermosol free kind anyway because it can't hurt.

  • Ditto pp - the baby has to be at least 6 months. I haven't researched this much since DS is not eligible for the flu shot (egg allergy) so DH and I are getting one to insulate him as best we can.
  • there is NO proven link between thermisol and autism. there is a flu shot that you can get that doesn't contain it, but it's sometimes hard to get (especially later in the season).

  • Thermisol does not cause autism but some kids who already have autism can have adverse affects when being exposed to mercury. Kids with autism have more trouble metabolizing mercury and that can make autistic symptoms worse. But like the pp's said you can seek out a thermisol-free shot. That's what I plan on doing.
