combining pumped milk of different temps...no no ?

I was just reading another post and read that this is a no no.  Why?  I did not know this and now have no way of knowing which of my "stash" I've done this with.  How bad is this & why?  Should I just stop doing it going forward or do I need to throw what I have out?  :(

Re: combining pumped milk of different temps...no no ?

  • My thought is that you can still use the old stash, but discontinue doing it from now on.

  • I didn't see the post and I'm not sure I agree.  Now I have to go look.  I know you can mix, but I wouldn't pour warm milk over frozen or anything like that (and even then, I don't know why, I just don't do it).
  • I add milk to a bag that is in the fridge throughout the day and once I get a bag of 5 oz I put it in the freezer. If I didn't I would be freezing in only 1-2oz amounts and that would be very wasteful. I have never heard that this is bad and I thought a lot of people do it.
  • from what I understand, you can combine freshly expressed milk with refridgerated milk, but not freshly expressed with frozen. You don't want to thaw any of the frozen milk with the warm milk.

I, too, pump and refrigerate throughout the day and combine them for freezing.

  • The Ameda website's guidelines say it's not a problem to add fresh milk to refrigerated.  https://www.ameda.com/milkstorage/more.aspx

This is what I was trying to say, but at the same time I haven't seen any research to back this, you know?  It's just one of the things I don't do for no apparent reason.
  • Thank you so much!!  That is what I've been doing.  Collecting milk throughout the day in the fridge and then bagging it and freezing it once it builds up so I'm not freezing 1-2 oz. at a time.  I always freeze within the same day.  Sounds like I'm fine.  Thanks again!!  :-)
  • I've mixed fresh with frozen...it just makes it as old as the oldest milk.  So If I add fresh to frozen to fill a bottle, it must be used within 24 hours - the guidelines for frozen bm.  I also mix them as the same temp - so I defrost the frozen in the fridge & mix with other fresh milk that is at the same temp - does that make sense?
