    They're usually for people who have flat or inverted nipples... sometimes for early babies who have trouble latching or sucking. It's like a nipple extender kinda sorta.

    So they suck on the shield instead of the nipple? I don't get it either...

    A nipple shield goes over your nipple and draws the nipple into it so that the baby can suck easier.  It's like having a bottle nipple attached to your boob.  It is also sometimes used if your nipples are cracked and bleeding so it doesn't hurt as much.

    After my bf class they told us to go home a squeeze our boobs, if our nipples remained out then we probably wouldn't have a problem. If they went in we would.

    My cousin as well as a friend said they're good for protecting against cracking/bleeding, etc. so I got one off of eBay for $6. If I never use it, at least I didn't waste that much money, but I'm prepared!
