BFing and peanuts

Is anyone concerned about BFing and eating peanuts? I hadn't thought about it, but someone mentioned that it could cause an allergy in my DS. I don't want him to have a peanut allergy, so I'm considering staying away. I love peanuts and peanut butter and they are great for protein, but I may try to avoid them. Am I being overly cautious?

ETA: I don't have any history of food allergies in our families.

Re: BFing and peanuts

  • do you have a strong family history of food allergies? If so, then I think it is good to wait, but if not, then yes you are being over cautious. Nuts are good protein, and you need protein.

  • My first daughter had food allergies (dairy, egg, nuts) but has out grown them. She is now 4. We had no history of allergies in our family so we were pretty caught off guard at her diagnosis when she was a year old. Her allergist at Duke said for Claire I should avoid nuts while breastfeeding since we now have a family history of allergies. At first, it was hard but now it is no big deal and I don't even miss it.
  • No history of allergies in my family so I am not worried and eat peanuts/pb - never talked to my dr. but it says you can eat it if you have no allergies in your family in What To Expect the First Year.
  • Yes, you are being overly cautious. No scientific study has proven a link. I eat peanut butter almost daily.
