How did you break the swaddle?

DD is only 8 weeks but I am just wondering when I will be able to retire the swaddle and how do I know she is ready, etc? Right now she will only sleep if she is swaddled. If we unswaddle her she is wide awake. Every once in a while she gets her arms out and seems to do just fine. Just wondering if I should start transitioning her out of it?

Re: How did you break the swaddle?

  • I shudder at the mere thought of the day we break the swaddle...

  • we will be doing this tonight, so I am interested in tips also!!
  • I hear you guys!  My daughter was addicted to the swaddle and couldn't sleep without it.  She didn't break it until 3-4 months...at which point, we started with one arm out, and then two arms out, and then no more swaddle.  Took a few nights, and some restfulness, but eventually she did it.

I wouldn't rush it - as they start to break out on their own - you'll be able to do it easier.

  • we are only one night in to non-swaddled, but it knock-on-wood, went well,  I tried a few weeks ago- it was a no go, but now that he LOVES to suck his hand I decided to try again.  The one arm thing didn't work for us, he seemed very uncomfortable, so I went straight to a sleep sack.   For the past week I swaddled him to sleep, then when he woke at 3-5am, I did not reswaddle him when I changed and fed him.  so he did his second stretch free.    Then last night I put him down without it, and it was longer to get him to sleep, but once he was asleep the night progressed like normal.
