My DH and I are considering buying our own health insurance policy independent of my employer. He runs his own freelance business and I don't plan on going back to work for at least 6 months after the baby arrives. We're trying to avoid the lofty $700 per month Cobra payments when I leave. Anyone have decent healthcare coverage for your family thorugh a self-insured plan?
I have always carried employer-provider health insurance and afraid I'll have to pay a ton each month and get crappy coverage.
TIA!

Re: Anyone carry independent health insurance policy not from employer?
DH did for a while, and the coverage/fees were fine. I know some people do this for their kids because it is cheaper to insure them separately than add them to company plans sometimes.
However, when I looked into it last year, any plan with maternity coverage was astronomically expensive, so DH's plan was cheaper.
My parents do, but I know when you add maternity type coverage the fees go sky high....I had coverage after college on my own but without maternity coverage. It was ok. I got it through BCBS, call your insurance person and have them run a few numbers for you.
