Nursing gowns

I have heard that it is best to have a nursing gown for in the hospital and learning to breast feed.  Is this a must have or can you make due without it?  The nursing gowns seem to be a little expensive.

Re: Nursing gowns

  • I'm just going to wear yoga pants and maybe some nursing tanks with a sweater to keep me warm.  I've heard the Target nursing tanks aren't bad and are pretty inexpensive.  Otherwise I have a few shirts that won't be too bad for nursing...I might wear them too.

  • The hospital should have a nursing gown for you to wear.  I personally was more comfortable in a nursing tank and then could throw a zip up hoodie over it if I was cold.  I lived in my nursing tanks and would highly recommend getting several.  For me they were more practicle than a nursing gown since I could wear them anytime of day.

  • Just like Mrs. bridgettkey has said - the hospital should give you a gown to wear but I quickly switched out into yoga pants & a nursing tank (with a zip up hoodie)
  • I bought one for the hospital, but never wore it. I also lived in my Target nursing tanks and zip-up hoodies, at least until I found out I couldn't BF.

I believe that the nursing tanks at Target are actually on sale this week. If you can, I would go a size up from what you normally would wear.

  • I forgot to add This is the shirt I lived in, yes it is low very low cut but it is so cozy for night time feedings

  • A nursing gown is NOT a neccessity.  Really you just need to have tops that are comfy and boob accessable.  After having DD1 I lived in my nursing tanks, after DD2, however, I couldn't stand them so I just wore a lot of low-cut tops or tops that could be unbuttoned/unzipped one handed.  I, personally, found it easier and more comfortable to pull tops down rather than up for nursing, but my girls also HATED having their heads covered while eating.  Don't feel that you have to stock up on any certain top right now, just have a couple of options then figure out what works best for you once baby is here.  =)
