The short answer is we're not sure yet, but we're guessing he will. He has started wheezing all the time recently, and he has atopic dermatitis (strong correlation b/t that and asthma). Right now we're just waiting to see how it pans out...he was a 32 weeker (was on CPAP at birth).
DD was born at 26w3d and is now 3 years old. She was diagnosed with chronic lung disease. Our pulmologist told us that they won't diagnose asthma in kids under 5. Each passing year DD's lungs have gotten better and stronger. I'm hoping this year to keep her off the flovent all together and see how she fares over the winter months. I'm surprised that they are diagnosing your kids this young.
DS was born at 33 weeks and has inflammatory respiratory disease. Aka asthma.. They wont "call" it asthma until he is 4 or 5. It is just early signs of asthma for now. He uses the same inhaler Xopenex that I use for my asthma. You hook the inhaler on the end of air chamber attached to a mask.It makes it much easier for them to breathe it in.
We also have a nebulizer I put ice chips in and blow it near his face for him to breathe in the cool wet air for croup.
DD was the one who had more breathing problems in the nicu and came home on oxygen. She doesnt have asthma, but does get croup.
GL ! It is not fun having a baby struggle to breathe. ((HUGS))
Re: Moms of 'older' preemies...12months + ?
We do not know for sure, but Lily may have asthma. They were 31.2 weekers she was the smallest at 3lbs 7oz, all were on CPAP for 4 days.
