BF w/ dizziness, random numbness, headaches & vision changes

I have been having these horrible splitting headaches after nursing for extended periods. It starts off with feeling dizzy or "out of it", then a headache, then my face, legs, hands, feet or mouth will go numb for a minute then after awhile I notice that I "see" things out of the corner of my eye (like something moving) but it's nothing.. I'm super pale & clammy .. Plus my face has been twitchy on the right side since delivery. I said something to my doctor about the numbness, dizziness & the twitchiness & she didn't find it concerning. When I would start getting dizzy in the hospital they took my blood pressure a bunch of times & it was always normal.

Do you think this has something to do with BFing? The epidural? Is this normal?

  • Are you taking medication that you havn't had before for pain?  That would be my guess, I always hate the feeling the pain meds gave me....

  • This happened to me too. You probably need to drink a ton more water.

  • No, I'm not taking any pain meds.. they gave me anaproxen & percocet in the hospital & I started having panic attacks (I'm not good with things that make me feel loopy).

I've been drinking a truckload of water. I don't know if my body could handle anymore!

  • Hopefully its just the meds or something simple, but please do not ignore it!!  Those are NOT synptoms to be messing with.  I certainly don't think/expect this to be the case, or want to scare you...but a very good friend of mine had similar symptoms (though not preg/new mom) and it was a very large brain tumor she is waiting to have surgery on.....so I'm just saying, don't mess with it!
  • I would definitely get it checked out just to be safe.  If she doesn't take you seriously then you need to see someone else.  My guess is that it's low blood pressure (due to blood volume decrease) which is common after birth, but sometimes it's more serious.  Until you can see a doctor, drink plenty of water (no caffeine) and sit/lay down.  Don't sit-up and stand-up really quick either, that causes you blood to pool (think of a head rush).  Do it slowly.  I wouldn't hold baby standing up very long until you know everything is okay...low blood pressure can cause you to pass-out, which is exactly what you are describing (pre-syncope).

Better safe than sorry.  I got really dizzy and experienced pre-syncope symptoms a couple times after birth, but I also experience low blood pressure, so for me this is normal.

  • sounds kinda like my migraines.
  • It sounds like you're having migraines.  I had them for years before getting pregnant and haven't had one yet (since pregnancy).. my fingers are crossed!

Anyway, migraines can be hormone-related... mine were.  And our hormones can be pretty wacky after having a baby.  So, that's my internet diagnosis.  Smile

I'd call your doc.  This needs to be evaluated.  If it is migraines, which it sounds like it is, hopefully there's something they can give you while you're BFing.  GL!
