rash help

DD is 12 days old.  I started CDs on day 9 after the meconium cleared.  She was starting to get red on her butt before we switched to CDs and it's only gotten worse.

It's not yeast - I'm wondering if it's just from her pooping so much (with every diaper change).  I see this kind of rash at work in the NICU all the time, so I know it's common esp. with babies that poop all the time- but I'm wondering what I can do to help --- been slathering her with diaper cream and it doesn't seem to make a difference.  A friend did get me some Desitin ... I can use it with a liner if that will help.

I've been changing her every time she feeds (she is so difficult to put to sleep I hate waking her up).  Do I need to change her more often?

She's not acting like it's painful or hurts her.  I just don't want it to get any worse!!!  Otherwise, I just need some input for helping to both clear and prevent this kind of rash in the future.

 TIA!

Re: rash help

  • Don't use Desitin with CDs...even with a liner! It will make them all smell like fish, it has cod liver oil in it. I use balmex for DD's bad rashes with a liner (fleece) and it clears up and keeps her CDs clear of rash cream. I'd keep slathering the cream and using liners in the dipes until it goes away. If it doesn't go away soon, I'd consider changing creams.

  • Ds got his first diaper rash last week and I used California baby, which cleared it right up.  Not sure if you are BFing or not, but I have read that you can even dab expressed BM right on the rash.  I tried that too a couple of times, but I believe that it was the California baby that made it clear up.

     I'll try the EBM!!

If it doesn't clear up in a day or 2 I'll try the California Baby cream

  • unfortunately, like with every baby thing from diapers to bottles to baby wash, it's all trial and error.  One kid will react great to desitin, another will need balmex, and another will need A&D. Other things to try are triple paste, Boudreaux's butt paste, pinxav, and plain vaseline. (I don't think any of those are CD-safe, but a fleece liner might be enough to keep your dipes protected.)

There are CD-safe creams (Grandma El's is one we're going to try soon), and some tea tree oil in your wipe water might help, too.
