Newborn CD Q- Prefolds, and what else?

We are planning to use the JD Trial package- but am thinking about waiting until the baby is out of the newborn phase.

So, for the newborn phase- I was thinking of using some prefolds and a cover.

About how many prefolds do I need?  Cheapest place to get them?
How many covers, and any tips on what kinds?

Do you recommend the little snappy thingees?

Anything else?

Re: Newborn CD Q- Prefolds, and what else?

  • I haven't CDed a newborn yet, but will shortly. I have 12 yellow edge and 24 orange edge PFs from www.greenmountaindiapers.com

I also have about 6 NB size covers and a couple small covers. I will buy more covers as he grows.

  • Loading the player...
  • Get 2 dozen pfs, which means washing about every other day. Not sure about cheapest, but Green Mountain Cloth-eez are definitely the best.

I recommend 4 covers. I like both Bummis and Thirsties. NB bummis fit tiny newborns really well, but are quickly outgrown; XS Thirsties will be big at first but will fit longer.

Definitely get a snappi!!! Get 2 actually. They are fabulous: easy, quick, pain-free, and hold the pf nice and snug. Laying the diaper in the cover has never worked for us.

You'll also want a pail liner and probably a wetbag. Consider cloth wipes.

  • I am assuming you do not need to wash the covers every time?  That's why only 4 covers are needed?

  • When DD was a newborn we had 34 diapers that fit her and that seemed like a good number. I think I was doing laundry maybe every 3 days, sometimes every 2 if she went through a wet streak.

I definitely recommend the snappies, they make everything a lot easier. I would also say at least 5 covers since the newborn poop is so runny, especially if you are BFing, you will get more leaks than normal onto the cover. It's annoying to have to do laundry just because you ran out of covers.

I would also suggest maybe getting 6-12 Kissaluvs in size 0. They are fitteds and are GREAT for newborns. They fit great and are awesome at keeping the poo in. I had 8 I think and I used them for my nighttime diapers since they were a little more "easy" to get on during the night when you are half asleep.

    Good luck!!

  • Do you need a cover with the Kissaluvs?
  • I would also recommend Thirsties covers, but really just look for anything with a double leg gusset. Again, it's another protective barrier for those runny poops.

And yes, at least 2 snappis (we've always had 4-6 as they always somehow mysteriously disappear for periods of time :)

I would say 2 pail liners (one for wash and the other for pail) and a wet bag for your diaper bag.

And I also would say cloth wipes as it's a pain to have two separate trash cans for diapers/covers and then disposable wipes.  I made my own with remnant flannel and make my own wipes solution with water, a bit of baby oil and an atibacterial essential oil.
