Nursery Furniture = Tacky?

I'm in the market for a crib and dresser combo and I can't seem to find any online or in my town that fit our budget. However, I have found a crib that I love that fits our budget, but it doesn't have a dresser to match. My question is...I already have a changing table that I got from a consignment sale practically brand new for a good price and the crib matches the changing table well enough that it doesn't look funny, but now if I get a dresser that is slightly another shade of wood than the crib AND the changing table will all three of them look tacky or do you think with all the other decor around it wouldn't matter?

I'm really usually not this picky...I think I'm just on nesting overload!

  • Personally I wouldn't worry about it too much but if you are on a tight budget what about going with white? You can refinish what you already bought and then buy white everything else or refinish it.

Also - since nursery furniture is used for such a short time I really wouldn't worry about it. That said I bought a set because it will drive me crazy.

  • I think it's fine for pieces to not match.  When you think about it, unless you get a lifetime crib, your LO will only use it for a couple of years - same with the changer.  It's the dresser that the child uses for years and years.

  • I don't think it would look tacky, you are probably the only one who will notice they don't match exactly. If you ever watch any of those designing shows on TV ,they rarely do matchy matchy stuff and it all seems to work out well together. If you still think that one of them is really different to the others, you could stain it a similar color.
  • I wouldnt worry about it at all. You can do decorations that tie everything together and mismatched furniture wont even seem like a big deal.

  • I think it will look just fine.

I have never bought into that it-all-must-come-from-the-same-dye-lot mentality.

In our bedroom for example we have 3 matched espresso brown pieces.  There is also a Bombay Company lingerie chest.  And a deep brown antique sea captain's trunk.   They all go together really well but are not the exact same colour.

Also keep in mind, the crib and change table are short lived pieces.  Babies grown up.

  • We're in a similar position--our crib and glider will match, but the dresser is one we already have and the changing table was consignment, so they're different shades.  What we're doing is picking one or two colors out from the crib bedding and painting the dresser and changing table those colors.  That way everything is still pretty cohesive without being super-matchy, and we won't have to spend more money apart from a bucket of paint.
  • I have 3 step kids, not a single one of them has matching bed/dresser sets.

The crib I picked out SORT OF matches the dresser/changing table I have.  Its close enough.  I think as long as the room is nicely finished and decorated, if they aren't a definite match it can still look nice.

  • i'm in the same boat.. i fell in love with our crib before realizing that there's no matching dresser/changing table.  so, we have a crib but are going to have to purchase our other pieces from different stores.

as long as they are all the same finish, i wouldn't let it bother me too much! :) luckily, we went with a natural finish crib.. so it shouldn't be too hard to find a dresser/glider that "match".

  • Each piece of our nursery is different/we didn't go with a set... and I'm not worried about it. They're all in a "natural" light wood finish and look fine together.
