Viability U/S: When?

We have the option of getting our viability u/s anywhere between 6-8 weeks.  A part of me would like to do it early (I did it at 6w with P) because I am nervous about seeing a heartbeat, but the other part of me want to wait so they can see a bit more.

When is yours scheduled?

  • I had an u/s at 8 weeks.
  • 10 weeks, you should wait if you can bear it, you may not see the hb at 6 wks and may freak out
  • i was going to have one at 6w2d but i pushed it to 7 weeks so there would be no discrepancies.
  • My OB's office likes to schedule the first appointment between 7 and 8 weeks. I had my u/s at 7w6d this time.

Last time, I was seeing an RE and had weekly u/s. We didn't see the hb at 6w0d or 6w2d but saw it at 7w0d, so I wouldn't want to do it earlier than that if I had a choice.

  • I went in at 6w and we did not see a heartbeat yet, we go back on the 15th ill be 8w. we should see it then, but not seeing it at 6w was a let down. I would say go at 8w
  • I had my first ultrasound at 7wks 4days.  We were able to see the peanut, and hear the heartbeat.  My next one is my NT scan at 12wks 1day.
  • Eight Weeks!

  • The longer you wait, the better, IMO. Although, you may look at my scenario as a way to check in on the baby more often.

I had my first u/s at 4w5d because I should have been 7w2d, but didn't get my BFP until day 48 (I ovulated freakishly late). Anyway, when I went in, they were concerned that they just saw a gestational sack, so they made me come in a week later to make sure there was growth. Well, there was, and there was a heartbeat. BUT, the heartbeat was too slow. So I had to come BACK in two weeks later to make sure the hb sped up (it had a 50/50 chance of either speeding up or just stopping).

Moral of the story, I went in too early and they weren't sure of what would happen next, so I had to keep going in. I had got to peak at the baby (and see nearly week by week development which was cool) but they found a new concern every time - causing me stress.

You do what you want. Smile ?

  • Last pregnancy I had it at 7 weeks. ?This time I had it at 5w6d and we saw the hb. ?

  • It's at 8w6d I think (whenever Oct 13 is) but my office waits for 8-10 wks. If I had the choice I say go for the earlier one because you really won't see *that* much more 2wks later kwim? It'll pretty much just be a bit bigger of a jelly bean.

But the extra 2 wks of waiting could be immeasurably stressful for you.

ETA: I just gave this alittle more thought and maybe you shoudl wait at least until 7wks just to make sure there is a heartbeat to see and hear.

  • 6w1d but I think its mostly for a head count.

  • My original OB doesn't do viability ultrasounds.  You get one at 12 weeks IF you want to do the NT scan, otherwise, 20 weeks is the first.  So, I switched OB's and got a quick u/s at 10 weeks.  It was great to see arms and legs moving, little fingers and toes...very cool.  I'd wait as late as you can stand it.  More to see!
  • we have one u/s scheduled at our first appointment (7 1/2 weeks) and then the NT scan will be scheduled.
  • Mine was at 8 weeks.

  • I get nothing until my "big ultrasound," at 18-20 weeks.  I've heard the heartbeat on the doppler but that's not as fun...I'm a visual person.  Plus, I really want the picture to put up on my desk at work.  I guess I'll have to make copies because DH has already claimed it for his desk :-)
