cloth the first couple of weeks?

I was in a fabric store yesterday to get flannel for my wipes, and while the store employee was super nice, was giving me lots of unsolicted advice. Shocking, I know :-)  She mentioned using disposables (gasp!) the first couple of weeks b/c of all the "new" poo coming out and the likeliness of staining.  So, I thought I'd ask the experts - Is this true?  Are there any alternatives??

TIA!

Re: cloth the first couple of weeks?

  • Some EBF babies have poo that stains.  Some don't.  You won't know until you try.  The meconium WILL stain, but you might not even have to deal with it if your LO passes all the meconium while you're still in the hospital.

I've always heard (no experience yet) that CDs contain BF poo WAY better than disposables... I'm not worried!  And if something stains- it stains... I'll sun it, oxyclean it- whatever.  If the stain doesn't come out, then big deal, he's a baby... babies stain things some times.

  • That was my plan too - disposables for the first few weeks until I got the mommy thing under control, then try out cloth.

DD had other plans. She had the most horrendous, almost bleeding, bright red blistering rash by her 2nd day after birth. Major allergy to disposable diapers and wipes (wipes more so than diapers). We had to scramble for prefolds and covers...

If you are concerned about meconium stains (just the first 3 or so days.. after that, it turns into regular EBF poop), you could use a fleece or double up a flushable liner.

  • We CDed from the beginning, and had no issues with meconium. To be honest, I think EBF poop stains more. Either way, though, it is poop and it will stain. You can sun out just about any organic stain by putting damp diapers in the sun.

Same here.  You may want to have some sposies on hand just in case the laundry is too much for you.  My washer and dryer are in the basement so if I had had a C-section I couldn't have washed diapers for a week or two.  We actually started to use sposies after DS's circ because I was worried about the vaseline and the CDs but after a couple leaks I happily went back to cloth.

This. We used the disposables from the hospital for the first week and a half b/c we found having a newborn overwhelming, plus I had a 2nd degree tear and couldn't go up and down the stairs to our laundry. DD's meconium was gone by the time we were home anyway. It is a pretty ugly color, but agree with pp that you could probably just sun out the stain like poop stains. Fleece liners would probably prevent staining, but don't rely on flushable. We use flushable liners when we use desitin and still have poop stains occasionally. Fleece is much more blocking.

  • I'm planning to have a small pack of disposables on hand for the first couple days if I need them, but I'm hoping to start cloth as soon as we get home and just sun out the stains if necessary.
  • We had a homebirth so we used CD from the second of birth.  And I disagree that mecominum stains.  We used Kissaluvs and prefolds and we had no staining issues at all.  I didn't scrape or rinse off the poop either- I just put it straight in the wash (and at that time, I didn't do a cold prerinse, I did just a hot wash/cold rinse).  I think 1 diaper had a slight darkening inside after a wash but the next time it was used and washed it went away.  So I say go ahead and use CD from the start.  Its not hard at all and its so fun to see the newborn in this cute fluffy diaper!
  • You might not pop back in here but in case you do, here are my two cents based on what others who have done it from day one have said when this question has been asked in the past.

I plan to use them at the hospital. Meconium can stain but so will bf poop and you're going to have bf poop for a long long time. And regular solid food poop can stain too so really, worrying about stains in an item that is for holding poop is probably a losing battle. If it stains it can be removed. You can soak in oxyclean or sun the stain out or leave it alone and it will wash out on it's own in a few washes (at least in my experience it has), of course by then you'll probably have a whole new stain so it won't matter!
