Pregnant after a Loss

Where can I find some cheap books for baby?

I want to buy some classic books for our LO like the ones I read growing up - The Hungry Caterpillar, Where the Wild Things Are, The Bearnstein Bears, etc. and I'm not sure where the best place is to find then kind of cheap.

Any ideas or suggestions?

  • We did one of those children's book of the month clubs and ordered a bunch all at once.  It turned out to be pretty cheap overall and we just filled the requirements right away and cancelled.

  • See if any of the Elementary schools around you have a book fair coming up.  The one my nephews go to has a book fair every couple of months and you can get tons of books for a great price.
  • I always find awesome deals on classics at TJ Maxx. Weird, but true. :)
  • Have you had your shower yet?  We asked guests to bring a book instead of a card.  We got tons of classics and now our guests sentiments are there for us to read anytime too!

  • Super cheap route would be garage sales, craigslist, used childrens stores.  I also second TJ Maxx or Marshalls.

This is what we did. The invite had a poem, here is some of the different poems I stole from BOTB years ago and sent to my hostess:

As (Mother-to-be's name) due date is coming near,
We're inviting friends and family dear.
To choose a favorite story or fairy tale
That you would like Baby ________ to hear.
Instead of a card, please let (mother-to-be's name)look,
At your special choice of a book,
and then to Baby _________ she will read
With all the love a newborn will need.
So with a personal touch, please choose a book
And in it then your name do put.
It need not cost more than a card
Just pick a favorite, it shouldn't be hard.

I want to be a bright child
As smart as I can be.
    That is why I'm hoping
My mom will read to me.
If you plan to bring a card
    Please take another look,
I would like to learn my ABC's
    From your favorite storybook.
    Please sign your name
    As your personal touch.
    Baby ________ thanks you
    Beary, beary much.

Or replace the last paragraph with the following:

Please add your name and a note
Then I'll know you've done your part.
Some day I'll surely thank you
From the bottom of my heart.

    Although cards are nice
    They're read once or twice
Maybe three or four times at best
    A book is a treasure
    Forever and Forever
    So instead of a card
    To be put aside
    Please give the little baby
A book with your name inside
It will be read to our little tyke
    Before bed each night
    And we will thank you
    Forever and Forever!
~ submitted by Erin, Thanks! ~

A card is nice, its sentiment sweet,
But a book will keep baby on her feet.
For years to come, baby will read
Longing for stories will never be a need.
A shelf full of wisdom for all to give,
For baby to keep as long as she shall live.
Filling the shelf should not be hard,
If you would please sign a book instead of a card.

  • my parents buy "lots" of book on ebay (I'm still not sure what they mean by "lots", they don't mean "many")  Anyway, they have a literal TON of books at their house including a very large drawer full of childrens books that I think are for us.  I'd definitely check that out because I know my parents love a good deal.

This!  My friend made this request at her shower.  It was a lot of fun, and now the baby has a wonderful variety of books, all with inscriptions from loved ones.  I'll definitely be doing the same.

I don't know if you have them near you, but Building 19 is a great spot for cheap books.
