Frozen Breast Milk Smell

I thawed out some frozen BM last night and it had a bad smell to it and my baby wouldn't drink it.  So I got out some more and it smelled the same way.  I opened out 4 or 5 packs even some I had just frozen two weeks ago and it all smelled different than my freshly expressed.  I can't imagine it has all gone bad?  Has anyone had this problem?  Is it bad or does frozen milk just have a different smell?

Re: Frozen Breast Milk Smell

  • My frozen milk has a different smell, but not bad (well, I don't like it, but not like sour milk).  Ds takes it though.  Maybe you have excess lipase???  I don't know much about it, but have heard that some babies won't drink frozen milk b/c of it.

  • my stored bm smells different too. Even if i don;y freeze and leave in the fridge for a bit it smells different than just expressed milk
  • I have excess lipase in my milk so it sours when frozen and DS will not take it. Some women have so much that they can't cool the milk at all w/o scalding it first, luckily I can refrigerate mine. I just pump enough while at work for him to have throughout the week while I'm gone.
