Freezer Space for breastmilk

DH and I started thinking about buying an additional freezer for storing breastmilk since I'll be heading back to work in March and will want to have a good supply built up. I guess I'm just trying to get a feel for how much space we'll need and how much you freeze at one time. So, some questions...

-Did you/do you have an additional freezer for storage or did you find your current one sufficient enough?

-What size freezer did you purchase? Model? Any complaints or raves?

-About how much do you usually store at a time? (I know this probably varies, but I'm just trying to get an idea!)

Feel free to share any other useful info. Thanks :)

Re: Freezer Space for breastmilk

  • With such a large purchase, I would hold off until you know how your supply is.

I pumped for 3 weeks and had a fairly strong supply - 8 ounces every 3 hours.  I used the Gerber seal 'n go bags but since he was drinking BM during the day, I would only freeze about 10 oz from the day.  I FF at night, so I also had about 25 oz. at night to freeze.  The bags can hold 8 ounces even though they are only marked for 6, and they lay flat when freezing so they don't take up much room.  Then I put them inside larger freezer bags to keep them dated in order - no fancy organizer needed, that will only take up more room!

  • We didn't  buy a chest freezer until my freezer stash was growing too large for our kitchen freezer (Ethan was about 3 months old).  I added a pumping session (just one side) in the morning when Ethan was a few weeks old.  My body became used to producing that extra milk so I had an extra 4-6oz every day to freeze.  We bought a 5cu ft chest freezer and it is more than enough room.  The bags freeze flat so even when I had 300 oz the freezer had tons more room to store.

  • Thanks for your responses ladies! I never thought to wait until I see what my supply and our need is. I tend to plan ahead, but that isn't always the best thing to do. I'll hold off, thanks!
