Introducing new foods..

ok so I will admit I am a slacker about this. I am all about the baby foods and we have done just about them all. But when it comes to real food, you know like you or I would eat I am extremely hesitant to give any to Brendan for fear of him choking. Did you have this fear and if so how did you get over it? Also what's a good basic to start with.

Thanks!

Re: Introducing new foods..

  • If I could give the guys stuff they would actually put in their mouths....

I would suggest really well cooked soft pasta noodles, graham crakers or other cookies that turn to much quickly when wet, really well steamed mushy veggies (your fav, I know).

I'm sure others have better suggestions.

  • Now, we give Max just about anything we eat, cut up tiny. (Just no shellfish or nuts yet)

I was totally over cautious for a long, long time, but once he had a few teeth, my sister pointed out that he understands chewing (he'd chew one Cheerio about 20 times! LOL) so I could get a little more adventurous.

Some of the early stuff that he loved was little chunks of grilled veggies; sweet potato, zucchini, potato, avocado, banana... the tip my sister gave me was the "rule of thumb": If you can squish it between your thumb and forfinger, his gums can squish it so it's a good choice!

Have you tried the level 3 baby foods? Like the pasta with little bb-shaped pasta in it? It's a good introduction to chunkier stuff.

As an aside, Max isn't into sweet stuff at ALL! I was concerned for a while, that he wasn't interested in eating, but he just prefers savory to sweet!

  • I still worry about choking more than I should. At this point, if something is too big to swallow, Marino just lets it drop out of his mouth. The first thing I gave him regular size was baked mac and cheese with broccolli. I use brown rice pasta shells (very soft and smaller than regular shells). I can send you the recipe - Marino loves it and its easy to make. You could also try making orzo (VERY tiny) with very tiny veggie pieces in it (Marino hates tomato sauce so I use different things as "sauce" - pureed squash w/ cheddar, olive oil and lemon juice, etc.).
