How safe is the beach?

I have some concerns about if and when we can bring DD to the beach.  She was born 7 weeks early and will be 20 weeks old (actual age)tomorrow.  We live in FL, it's still very warm out but we would love to know when we can enjoy the beach. 

 How old were your little ones when you ventured out to the beach?  Did you apply SPF before 6 months old?  What about putting her feet in the water? 

We bought DD a little tent to shade her from the sun but it will still be quite warm outside... how long can we stay there with her?

Any help is appreciated!

    I live on the coast, and we go to the beach just about every weekend. We would put a wide brimmed hat on dd, as well as keep her in a tshirt and under a shade. I think if you do all that, it will be perfectly fine to bring your lo to the beach. We put her lil feet in the water at 3 months old, and she loved it! The only thing about taking a lo to the beach, is to make sure that they won't overheat. Our trips to the beach were short 1-2 hours. .My daughter is now 2, and we still only go for a few hours at a time. Have fun!

    forgot to answer your sunscreen q... We started putting it on her at around 6  months

    our pedi said if we must bring R outside in the sun (when he was a few months old) to always use sunscreen but it's best to keep him out of the sun as is any baby under 6 months old. we use Neutrogena sunscreen, the kind that doesn't have all the chemicals in it. the first few times we took him to the beach or pool we only stayed for about an hour and then he was done and ready to nap. we took him swimming and he loved it. have fun!
