Still out of work, anyone else?

So I have worked in the home building industry for 11 years and lost my job via a lay off in December due to sales being down.  I'm really getting concerned that I will never get another job.  I haven't started looking at other industries at this point due to I LOVE working in the building business.  Anyone else on this board out of work from a lay off and still looking for a job.  Due to DS being 1 I really have to find a job with a certain salary for it to make sense financially to go back to work due to the cost of day care in Raleigh.  I would say of all the people laid off from my old company that maybe 4 out of 45 have found jobs at this point.

  • U've got me very curious about where u used to work in teh buiding industry. If u dont mind sharing where did you work at. I used to work for a civil engineering/land surveying company where we worked with houses and such and was also laid off at the end of November and haven't foudn or seen much of anything around. Its gonna be a lil while before that takes an uphill turn. Good luck to you and hopefully things look up soon for everyone!

  • Not in the homebuilding industry (I'm in Human Resources), but I have been looking since about mid February. I've been out of work since the end of '08, but my baby was born on Jan 6. I lost my permanent job last August, and worked a contract position from Sept thru Dec...

    Yeah, it sucks. Sad

I worked with Anderson Homes.  I had been there for over 6 years.  They had started layoff's last August.  I made it through 4 layoffs but my luck ran out in December.  The company last year had 65 employees and between August 08- February 09 they had let go all but basically 12 employees.  Yeah I really don't know what to do.  DH has given me through next summer to find a job in homebuilding and then if still nothing he wants me to switch careers.  I am hopeful by Spring 2010 that things will pick up.  Sales are picking up some places.  My friend at Lennar in Raleigh told me they had 39 closings last month so that gives me hope.  I've started a Home Staging business so hopefully that will give me a little bit of work in the meantime.

GL.  unfortunately the number of closings don't mean much right now due to the fact that a majority of the banks aren't leveraging money like they used to... they're collecting every penny they can so debts can be repaid.  it's a vicious circle, and as much as i would love for it to change and i could get my job back, most people don't see it happening anytime soon Sad  most builders i know of don't have plans to do any hiring even after it picks up since they're operating (reasonably) well on fewer staff... and with predictions for the market to not even come close to '07 levels in the next decade, more bad news for us.

i hate it... i loved my job, but i've had to look much wider than building Sad
