Using back of LO's neck to tell temp

What's the rule for this? Are they too hot only if sweating or if the skin is warm/hot?

Re: Using back of LO's neck to tell temp

  • As far as the babies temp, just dress them one layer warmer than you would wear. So if you are sleeping in a t-shirt dress baby in a long sleeve jammie or sleep sac. We keep our ac on cold so we swaddle and tuck a blanket around her lower half (never loose or around her arms-SIDS).

If your baby too hot his neck will be hot to the touch and skin will be red. He will probably be screaming, so you will know.

  • I've always heard dress your baby the way you're dressed (you have the same body temp).  If you're cold, LO will probably be cold or if you're hot, LO is probably hot.  Our LO HATES being hot so he just screams.  I think for sleep it's wise to dress the baby a little warmer than you're dressed...you can always get a blanket, they can't.  We tuck a blanket around our LO, but we almost always put him to bed with at least sleeves on so his arms don't get cold.

Right now, I'm in short and a tank and comfortable.  LO is sleeping in a long sleeved, long panted sleeper with socks on and a blanket (he has wiggled it down to just his legs are covered) and the sleeper is t-shirt material.

  • Nothing to do with sweat -- some people just like to feel the back of the neck to get an idea of baby's temp. If neck is hot, baby's hot. I was told to feel the ear lobes and tip of the nose. If those are cool, then baby isn't too hot.

  • Pedi always says to dress baby as you would dress conservatively.

Sweating is an indication but a lot of times babies aren't able to release sweat as we are which is a SIDS risk. Don't over-dress baby IMO.

Babies rooms should be 68-72 and my DS sleeps best closer to 68 in a light weight onesie and swaddled - always has. Babies run warmer than we do.
