Re: possible asthma

  • I think I can sort of answer this.

We just met with our NICU followup nurse (state program similar to EI). She works FT as an ER nurse in our local children's hospital. She told me that preemies and babies who had bronchiolitis often have asthma-like symptoms but it doesn't mean they'll have asthma forever. She says they often outgrow it as they get bigger and their lungs mature.

My kids were 30 weekers, one spent a week on a vent and the other spent about 24 hours on a vent. They both tend to have asthma-type reactions to colds, and they both get wheezy if they cry a lot. So we have a nebulizer. But I don't think they're going to have long-term trouble with asthma, or if they do have asthma it will be very mild. They don't need any sort of preventative medicine, and we only use the nebulizer if they have a chest cold - so they don't have asthma issues with dust, pollen, etc.

I know it's hard, but try not to worry yet. There is a pretty decent chance that his wheezing issues will go away or drastically improve as he gets bigger and  his lungs mature.

  • my son has asthma. he was on the vent for about 7 days. after he was home for 2 months he started wheezing. he was on preventative breathing treatments for about 8 months? now he only wheezes when he is really active or when he gets sick. he's only had 3 try asthm attacks. he has gotten croup (a virus that that inflames the upper airways) a few times and had the stridor with it (the horrible sound when they are breating in). a few weeks ago he got croup and had an asthma attack that would not go away with his rescue inhaler and we had to call 911. it way sucked!

he sees a pulmonologist and he says that it may go away by puberty and it may not but he is happy with his progress.
