one twin likely coming home next week

I'm so excited but I have no idea how to divide up my time between the the one in the NICU and the one coming home.  How did others do it?

Re: one twin likely coming home next week

  • I can't imagine dividing the time between 2 babies that are the same age, one at home and one at the NICU.  But we took shifts Mom/NICU and Dad?home and switched it off and on with our 3 year old and the new baby.

  • I also had a 16 month old, so that adds a whole other element to it. But after we left the hospital with Mason I was only able to go up to the hospital once a day for a few hours. I was nursing Mason and pumping for Wyatt. By the time I finished the nurse/pump cycle I usually had about 15-30 minutes before I had to start again. I was also not allowed to drive myself for the entire time Wyatt was in the NICU and had to rely on someone else to take me. That caused an issue with who was going to take care of Rhett since he couldn't go to the NICU with us (he wasn't current on his shots because he had Fifths Disease when he should have gotten his 15 month vacs). So for the most part I stayed home and took care of Rhett and Mason while DH spent hours and hours at the NICU with Wyatt. It was really hard not to be up there more, but logistically we just couldn't figure anything else out. If I hadn't had a toddler at home then I think it would have been easier. I would have just had someone drive me up there with Mason and I would have nursed/pumped up there during the day. Congrats on bringing one of your babies home!

  • Congrats!

I worry about this a lot.  Currently our twins are in a different city than us.  It is a struggle to be there as it is.  Rachel looks like she is going to come home before Callum.  I just don't get how to do that.

  • Will your NICU allow you to bring the first baby back into the NICU after discharge? Our kids were born during RSV season, and our NICU had strict rules about not allowing visitors under 12 to go in during RSV season, including just discharged babies.

My husband ended up taking FMLA time off work, and we would swich off. He would stay at home in the mornings while I was with our other son, and we'd switch off after lunch. I honestly don't know how we could have managed if H hadn't been able to take that time off work.

My 2nd baby came home 3 weeks before my 2nd. Those 3 weeks were pretty effing difficult, but we got through them.

Good luck, and congratulations on bringing your 1st baby home. Hopefully your 2nd will follow soon :)

  • We only had the twins but I was allowed to bring Nathan back with me everyday that Joey was there.  It was only a week so that was good.  It was also still during RSV season, but they were ok with it.  They left Nathan's crib set up and everything.  I went every day from about 8-2, just pumped while I sat by the bedside and they were still so little they mostly slept.

  • We had friends in the NICU (one with twins, one w/ triplets)...I don't know how they did it!

One of the couples made it work by alternating who got to stay home and how got to go to the hospital, so they couldn't both go together anymore.  They lived in town though.

The other family, I believe, brought their baby with them back to the NICU for visits as they lived 1.5 hours away.
