BF Shopping Trip: What do I need & Recommend Your Favorites

I am making a list of the things I will need for BFing. I am also going to be pumping with a Medela pump so I know I will need storage bags and things. So what do I need and what is helpful or even to leave off my list? I need EVERYTHING! And also please recommend your favorite brands and also quantity to get started as a good supply (example: 3 boxes of 50 count storage bages). I have no clue, so thanks for putting up with me!

  • All you really need in the beginning is your breasts, maybe some pads for leaking and a tube of lanolin.
  • Loading the player...
  • soothies gel pads are really good for the early days
  • Nursing tanks from target (get two to start with, then get more once you decide if you like them)

Lansinoh storage bags--I'd just get one small box for now

Medela tender care nipple cream--I liked this way better than the other creams because it's not super thick

Medela breast shells--I rarely see anyone recommend these on here but they were a lifesaver for me. I started wearing them in the hospital and they kept my nips from brushing against my tank. Ahhhh...relief!! Once I got home, I wore them around the house to give my nips a break when they got sore. You obviously can't wear them out unless you want to have cone boobs, but they're so helpful in the beginning. https://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/products/breast-care/102/softshells-for-sore-nipples

I second this list.  My hospital gave me a small tube of Medela Lanolin (also my favorite by far) and that would have been enough for me.

LC gave me a pair of Medela shells while I was in the hospital, too.  She told me to wear them for a few hours a day to relieve sore nipples.  There were great.  I think I only needed them for a week or two.

I use Johnson & Johnson breast pads, but they were the third brand I tried.  I'd just buy one box of breast pads for now.  That way you aren't stocked up with a ton you don't really like.  Most people don't have to wear them for long, anyway (I'm just special like that).

  • If you plan to nurse in public I highly recommend a hooter hider or some other type of cover that goes around your neck. I flashed some people the first few times I tried it with just a blanket! I love Target nursing tank tops! I also really like the First Years breast pads with Lanolin. They come with a small spot of Lanolin on them that goes right over your nipple and you don't have to apply your own cream.
  • i have to add in addition to pp, I live in the target tank tops! love them. and i just got the Brest friend pillow a couple days ago and it has helped me tremendously.

  • In the beginning, a bobby and nursing bra.  I was able to support baby with the bobby and put my feet up in the recliner - and found I was able to sleep like this.  Great for those first weeks when you are feeding very frequently.

I like the lanilosh bags and the gerber bags.  Not a big fan of the medela ones. I always had multiple sets of pump parts so that I justed washed at night (using a clean set for each of my 2-3 pumping sessions during the work day). Multiple nursing bras and a set of nursing PJs were very useful.

  • I like the Lanisoh bags.  One box will be fine for the beginning.

    Lanisoh cream I liked.

Brest friend pillow.  I am not sure how anyone nurses with a boppy.

Your pump although you probably won't need this right away.

Nursing bras and tanks.  Tanks are not nec but nice to have.  I have never used the target ones i had two motherhood ones I liked and will be using again this time.  But the bras for sure!!  I used to wear my nursing bra and a cami tank under everything I wore.
