Potty training setback 3.5 yr girl?

DD has been in panties for almost 6 months.  She would occasionally have a #2 accident, but rarely.  The past week she has had one every single day!  Even in public, she wet her pants at the mall today.  She has a couple of 'life changes' lately- a new babysitter because I have gone back to work part time, and she starts preschool next week.  They insist that she be "fully potty trained" to come to preschool, and I am so worried that she is going to have an accident there and get kicked out!  If this is normal and happened to your DD, how long did it last??

Re: Potty training setback 3.5 yr girl?

  • totally normal... and the preschool should  know that, so don't worry about them.  dd had a phase of going and standing in front of the potty and peeing on the floor... we figured out that she spotted daddy standing to go and couldn't understand why she could not.  lol.  that was a few days... then she went through a public toilets are scary phase (she's been through this a few times... usually only lasts a week or so... but the last time, it lasted for a month! thanks nola airport)... we use the stickies over the sensors , try to find quiet, less crowded restrooms...  and for a time, I had to sit on the seat and have her sit between my legs to go (when in public).... last summer, she was nearly completely trained... started preschool and had a set back for a few weeks (she was 2 1/2 at the time)...    big changes or a scare sets her back for a short time.  totally normal.

    hang in there.

  • DD had been fully trained for about 9 months when she had a regression period, at the same age. It was mainly that she would wait too long to go, and not make it to the potty in time. We just kept up with it--tried not to show frustration (hard) but she got back with the program. Although even now, occasionally she'll be really into something (usually playing outside) and she'll have an accident. She's been trained for a year! I really think it's like this until they are, like, 6 (at least that's what my friends have experienced, too). The preschool should understand that accidents sometimes happen--especially with a new environment and everything--and it probably wouldn't be a big deal. Good luck!
