Tonight my Nanny told me...

that it was okay to have your baby in bed with you up until 6 months, and then you need to start slowly working on getting them into their own bed. She heard this on the show, The Doctors. I had to chuckle and ask which doctor said that, even though I knew it was Dr. Sears. Haha, well it was on "The Doctors" so it's a fine practice in Nan's book now.

Re: Tonight my Nanny told me...

  • It kind of bugs me how *mainstream* the Sears' brothers have become.  I know at least he said it was OK, but why the weaning out at 6 months...his dad would never say that.  It's always when someone in the family bed is ready for change.

He bugged me with a bit on extended Breastfeeding too...

Yeah ... we don't get whatever channel that show comes on, so I've never seen it.  But I'm pretty surprised to hear he said "ok until 6 months".

  • Shoot, we didn't start bedsharing until 6months. Last month I began weening DD to a toddler bed, so basically I put her down at bedtime, then wait for her to come into our room when she wakes up hungry, then she stays the rest of the night with us. I expect her to stay in her bed all night by the time she's 5 years old...maybe.

  • I saw the same episode and I am pretty sure it was Travis Stork who said bedsharing "until 6 months". He also was not very pro-EBF. But the part that upset me was when Dr. Lisa, the OB said that there is no benefit to extended breastfeeding except for Mom mentally. Wow! I am hoping that I misunderstood what she was saying (I was folding laundry with my 2yo at the time - so I was otherwise occupied).

BTW - you could tell from a couple of responses that Dr. Sears had to Travis Stork that they really did have a fundamental disagreement that they were trying not to air.

I got the same thing out of what Dr Lisa said- that's really disappointing.

  • I missed this episode but will write a letter to them if I see it - maybe its on their website
  • Here's the bit on extended BFing...I don't watch this show, but I that OB lady is a piece of work!

Yeah, she seems like a bit of a quack, but I'm shocked that mainstream TV aired a show where an expert said it was improper for a physician to dictate an end-point for BFing, and talked about how healthy 14 month old EBF kids were.  Kudos to them for airing that.

  • My Gummy watches that show too. She is always offering me "advice" b/c she knows I read the Dr. Sears books.

I've never seen the show before, but it seems to me that she should maybe stick to what she knows (though I've heard she's got some whacked out opinions on her areas of expertise as well...)
