Preemies

Anyone give birth in week 36?

I've been on bed rest since week 28 due to PTL. Last night was my last night of taking terbutiline and Sunday is my last day of bed rest. I'll be 36 weeks and was just wondering what to expect in case he comes in the next week. I recieved the two doses of the steriod shots at week 32. At 34 weeks he was projected to be 5 lbs 2 oz on a level II ultrasound. Thanks for any information!

Re: Anyone give birth in week 36?

  • I was bedrested in my 31st week for PTL and shortening cervix and got steroid injections then.  I had DD at 34w6d and she was 6lb7oz, spent one day in NICU because they anticipated breathing problems but she didn't need any special treatment at all (she had an IV for antibiotics since they didn't know about my group b strep).

I know she is a little bit of an exception but I just wanted to say that they can do quite well!  She came home with me from the hospital just two days after she was born.

  • I gave birth at exactly 36 weeks with DD. She was 6 lbs and didnt need any medical intervention. We were very lucky. They did say that girls tend to fare better than boys, but that's not always the case. But, 36 weeks is probably best when it comes to preemies :)

    Best of luck!

ETA: DD did have jaundice, but we were able to treat at home with CONSTANT nursing and biliblankets.

  • DS arrived at 35/5, so basically 36 weeks.  I didn't have any of the typical PTL issues - ctx, shortening cervix, etc - so there was never any reason for me to receive steroid shots.  I was high risk, however, due to GD, polyhydramnios, and a uterine anomaly (I have 2).

Like the pp said, boys tend to have more problems - the nurses said something about them not developing their lungs as quickly.  This was the case with DS.  He had respiratory distress at birth and spent 2-3 days getting O2 through a nasal cannula.  He also developed a mean case of jaundice - he was seriously orange! - and then started having trouble maintaining his temp while under the phototherapy lights in an open crib.  He went back into an isolette for the remainder of his treatment, but was ok otherwise.  He spent a total of 8 days in the NICU.

It was definitely scary and sad, but nowhere near as bad as the itty-bitties that I've read about on here.  In all likelyhood, things will be fine - especially since you've had the steroid shots.

Is there any way you can request a tour of the NICU or a consult with Neonatology just to ease your mind?  I wouldn't think that would be unreasonable, based on your history.

    Good luck!  Mary

  • I had my twins at 36w0d, the same day I quit taking my terbutaline and nifetapine.  I had been on full time bedrest since 22w1d when I went into PTL (also had mag sulfate for 5 weeks until 27 weeks or so).  I had the steroid shots at week 24.  My DS was 4 lbs 9 oz and DD was 4 lbs 2 oz at birth.  Neither of them spent any time in the NICU -- both were sent to the "transition" nursery for 6 hours after birth to be evaluated and observed, but then were sent to the regular nursery.  They were born on Friday and went home with me on Tuesday.  We had very  minor jaundice issues while in the hospital but none once home.  We have not had any breathing difficulties. Both babies were able to drink from a bottle the night they were born.

Best of luck to you and your LO!

  • Yep - 36w1d.  I had the steroid shots, too.  DS was IUGR, so he was pretty small and admitted to the NICU initially for hypoglycemia, but he stayed 10 days for feeding/growing and was also treated for jaundice during that time.  His lungs were fine but he had a little problem regulating body temp (again IUGR related).   You may very well get to take your LO home quickly!  If you do have NICU time, I bet it's short!  GL!

  • No steroid shot, b/g twins born at 35w. 1d. no NICU time at all. Good luck!
  • I did not have steroid shots, so yours will probably fair better than mine. One of my boys was with us the whole time and the other spent 12 days in the NICU for Respiratory Distress Syndrome. They were born at 36 + 3.
