Ask them to pick whether "everything is liberal media shoving it down children's throats!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!" or alternatively "people blame too much on society and the media! It's the parents' responsibility!!!!!!!!!11!!!!!11"
It makes it easier if you pick which nonsensical railings you have to waste more breath on.
Also, Sesame Street is trying to make everyone think it's cool that there are MONSTERS and LOWER MIDDLE CLASS NEIGHBORHOODS in our country. WTF? *And* they want us to read? No way, man. No f-ing way.

DH was just telling me yesterday that Dora and Diego have been banned from BIL's house because the toys and shows were teaching my 3 year old niece Spanish. She would say things in Spanish and refuse to say them in English and it annoyed BIL and SIL to the point that they won't let her watch it anymore.
Yikes.

Damn that Obama.
You know, when his mothership took him back in time to plant that fake birth notice, it probably stopped off at the Children's Television Workshop to plant the seeds of his socialist plots.
IL's are the same way. Everything MIL comes over she complains that most of DD's toys have English/Spanish. The funny things is she bought her a Dora outfit, she has no idea Dora is Spanish.
People are just so small minded.

OK I have to say one more thing, from a bilingual/chicano studies/spanish major/ linguist's point of view, I have to say that I have beef with Dora because she only uses a few nouns and interjections, instead of fluid speech. In other words I don't like her because she doesn't use ENOUGH Spanish! No child will ever learn Spanish by watching Dora. Ok. I still have to stay out of the politics.
i just don't like dora bc her voice itself is like nails on a chalkboard to me. she's banned in our house, but DS loves his handy manny push behind/ride-on toy....
I can't stand Dora, but it has nothing to do with her speaking Spanish, I just think she's really annoying.
I plan to teach DD Spanish(what little bit I know) when she gets a little older. I learned some from Sesame Street when I was little and I thought it was so cool. Lol
I'm assuming they don't like Sesame Street either? Luis and Maria speak Spanish. I even saw an episode where they were salsa dancing. Don't they know if they live in this country they're supposed to have no rhythm? The nerve!
Out of curiosity, where do your ILs live? They would probably have a fit if they walked through my neighborhood. Most of the kids here either have a Spanish-speaking parent or have a nanny who speaks to them in Spanish or both.
Ugh, we must have the same ILs. Mine got DS a Handy Manny toolbelt for his bday, but my MIL later told me when she bought it she didn't know anything about Handy Manny- "did you know he's Hispanic?" she asked me. Um, yeah....

Oh goodness ditto. I hate Dora with a fiery passion just because that must be the most annoying show on the planet. I get my spanish from Sesame Street like everybody else. So there!
Re: IL's don't like Dora
Yes, and I'm sure kids would only ever encounter Spanish-speaking people while doing missionary work with migrant fruit pickers.
Have they seen Kai Lan yet? That should finish them off.
Oh, trust me, I TOTALLY don't agree with them. At. All.
LMAO!

pretty much every show has spanish now.
carebears is currently on CBS - and they are all speaking spanish 1/3 of the time. no, really!
Your in-laws are totally right. Any toddler worth their salt would be enrolled in toddler ESL classes, not sitting around watching Dora.
Maybe you shouldn't tell them about Handy Manny.

Well, being in Canada I kind of wish that there was a "French" Dora too. DS will be going to a French school.
I speak fluent French, English and a fair bit of Spanish too.
Do your in-laws enjoy vacations in the tropics? I sure hope not. Hmm, why would anyone want children deprived of learning?
ditto. i especially hate that damn map.
i learn my spanish from handy manny!

LOL, This. Hell, even I'm picking up some Chinese and Spanish from these shows!
