3rd Trimester

Swelling/cankles question...

I just started getting some swelling in my feet/lower legs this past week... is it normal or should I be concerned that when they are swollen they hold an indent like a dimple when I press on the swollen part? ?(the swelling does go down if I lie down for awhile).

If I have my one foot resting on the other while lying on my side you can see the indent from my heel or ankle bone! ?Is this just what happens? ?

Re: Swelling/cankles question...

  • That sounds like pretty typical swelling for pregnancy. The swelling with pre-e that is of concern usually happens in the hands and face moreso than feel and ankles... but if you are worried, definitely bring it to the attention of your dr.

  • Would I get the "dimple" effect in my face too if I was getting any face swelling, or in my hands? ?(I'm not, just wondering)
  • It sure sounds normal...I have that. Its called pitting edema. Its important to keep your blood pressure monitored and keep your OB informed.

  • I am actually not sure you would having the pitting edema in your face, never thought about it... but my face was HUGE... and I gained 9 lbs overnight when I had severe pre-e.... that is a good question.
  • It hit me in the last two weeks.  I just upped my water intake and try to keep my feet up when ever possible.

  • I  brought this very issue up with my OB this week and she assured me that it's perfectly normal to swell horrendously!  As long as your urine samples are clean and your BP is normal, then you're ok.  She said something like pregnancy causes 4-5 extra liters of water/fluid to accumulate in your body.  Talk to your OB if you're still nervous, though!  Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies.. it kind of freaked me out because I'm not used to it! ?Sorry no ticker- I'm 30 weeks with twins. ?I'll be asking the doc about it this week too I have another appt.
  • I have swelling like that also around my ankles and the dr just said to watch my salt, drink lots of water and try to elevate them as much as possible.
  • I wouldn't worry but it definitely won't hurt to bring it up at your next appointment. I had massive swelling in my feet and ankles from about 20 weeks on with my last pregnancy and it was totally normal. Seriously they were like boats.

  • I just started to get the same thing.. It doesn't hurt, but its just a little unsetteling. To look at my feet and ankles and have them remind me of a 80 year old grandma is NOT cool.
