Bedding- What's the Point?

So I keep hearing you can't have bumpers and blankets in the baby's crib because of safety issues and SIDS. So....if you don't have either of those things, what's the point in picking out cute bedding? I was all excited about picking out something super cute but now I'm demoralized Stick out tongue

  • Do yourself a favor and buy a cribskirt you love and save the money!  You can always use a breathable bumper or get a thinner one.  I made our cribskirt because I couldn't justify spending $200 on bedding she wouldn't touch.

  • The jury is still out on whether bumpers actually do cause a SIDs risk, they suggest if you use them to make sure it is tied tightly and the bumper top and bottom ties and to get the ones that are on the thinner side. I plan to use mine, everyone I know has used them without issues. Of course, use your best judgement.

As for the quilt I will also be using it as a tummy time mat.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I spent the cash on a nice bedding set for my son and we only use the sheet and the crib skirt. We took the bumper out the first night I found him rolled over, face smooshed against it. Was it suffocating him, no? Did it freak me out anyway? Yes. So we got a breathable bumper and never looked back.

Next time around I will re-use the breathable bumper  and spend my money on a really nice custom bedskirt with coordinating curtains and maybe even some matching changing mat covers.

  • I had the same feelings.  I wanted to ONLY get a crib skirt, but couldn't find any separates.  (Yesterday I saw PBK has them at their stores).  I ended up buying the zoo collection from Dwell/Target on clearance for $80.  I figured it was SO cheap that it was worth it.  You can always use an extra blanket, and you can put the matching bumper back in after the SIDS risk has decreased.  We registered for a breathable bumper at BRU.  I agree w/ you though.....

  • for my next baby i will only be buying a crib bumper, sheet and ikea crib (i dont need a crib skirt for those cribs).  no more sets for me!

  • Eh, allow yourself to get excited over the other decor in the room.  We had a custom crib skirt made and then put in jersey-knit sheets, nothing else.  It still looks pretty!
  • We used the bumpers.  DS's quilt hangs on his wall and DD's quilt is draped over the chair in her nursery.

  • I completely agree.  It sucks becasue everyone seems to plan their entire nursery around the bedding when it really isn't functional.  I could never justify paying $200-$300 on a bedding set that is too fancy to use or will just get peed or spit up on.

I was lucky enough to find a cute pink and green Tiddilwinks polka dot bedding set that I loved at Marshalls for $30.  It came with a bumper, crib skirt, quilt & sheet.  The quilt is a waste and I'm sure I will never use.  I'm still iffy about the bumper, she will sleep in a bassinet in the beginning and once I move her to her crib we will see how it goes.

  • Yeah I still can not wrap my head around the idea of bedding sets. You can not use the stuff in them, so why make them?!?

  • Bedding is just not worth it in my opinion.  We got a set for DS and he was almost 2 when we moved from an apartment to a house.  We changed everything then anyway as he was a toddler and started sleeping in a toddler bed anyway.  The bedding was pretty much a waste of money.

Also, bumpers don't just raise the risk of SIDS.  They have a huge risk of suffocation, and that is why we don't use them.

For DD I made a quilt that is bigger than a crib quilt so she can use it when she's older.  For now it will be draped on the glider.  I made a cute matching crib skirt and have a few sheets that match.  I designed her room around color schemes and the paint job, not the bedding.

  • We have used every part of our bedding.  We kept the bumper in since the get-go, and are just now using the comferter. I'm happy we spent the money on it and I think that we got our moneys worth out of it.  I also plan on using it on his toddler bed.

  • It's CRAZY!  You don't need it all but they "manage" to sell you all this stuff b/f you really know you won't use it.  Our expensive PBK bumpers barely saw the light of day - like pp, if I had known what I know now and for this next baby, I'll make the skirt (you can't use it once the crib is lowered all the way), finding sheets I like and leaving it at that.

Don't worry, you can focus on other things for the nursery.  Our wall decor became our focal point

  • We had a set custom-made for DD because I was absurdly picky. The bumpers stayed on the crib until she was close to a year old. We had to move her to a toddler bed at 15 months because she kept getting her thighs stuck in the crib bars, so we used the crib quilt as a blanket for her toddler bed. It allowed us to put her in a better bed for her without totally redoing the room's decor - we also used the crib sheets on her toddler bed.

This time around, I bought a PBK crib skirt, some crib sheets from PBK and Target, and a thin bumper from Ikea (all on sale, except for the bumper, which was under $15 anyway). FYI: Ikea bumpers do not fit standard non-Ikea cribs. Angry I'm irked about that, but I'm making it work - I had to remove all the ties and sew new ones onto the bumper so they could tie onto the crib where I needed them. My aunt is using some extra crib sheets from PBK and Target along with some other fabrics to make a matching quilt that we can use for tummy time or later for his toddler bed.

  • We bought a bedding set. I didn't know that the bumper was a problem so we planned to use that, the bed skirt, and sheets and then hang the quilt from the wall.  We purchased a convertible crib so when the crib changes to a toddler bed, the quilt can come down and be used on the bed.
  • personally, i can not justify spending hundreds on a bedding set. we are getting a breathable bumber and some cute, inexpensive sheets.

This is what i was going to say too. Mine is thinner too.

Plus, my bedding is neutral enough, that when we convert to a toddler bed, i'll use the quilt then for a blanket since you can't get flat sheets anywhere.
