Success after IF

12 weeks and spotting...

Hi ladies.

I woke up this morning and was disheartened to see some brown spotting after I went to the bathroom. It was still there 2 hours later when I went to the bathroom again but has finally stopped. I'm still freaked out and assuming the worst but wondering if this is enough to contact the on-call dr or if I should just call the office on Monday unless it starts up again. WWYD?

TIA!

Re: 12 weeks and spotting...

  • i spotted both pregnancies..both times on and off for weeks this time i even bled red for a day or two..and everything was just fine :)

i would call, but more for peace of mind than anything..all they will probably tell you is to take it easy, put your feet up and drink a bunch of water..and they might just say to call the office on mon. morning..

last time they had me come in when the office opened, but this time they said i had to wait until my next appt, and to call again if i had heavy bleeding or bad cramps.

good luck sweetie, im sure its nothing, but i know how stressful it is!!

  • Generally they say brown spotting = old blood and not a concern. And many, many women spot all the time during pregnancy without issue. But I'm sure it's still scary. I don't think there's a right/wrong answer about whether to call the doc - if you're concerned and aren't comfortable waiting, call, but if it has stopped and you think all is fine and are ok waiting, it's likely nothing. • it's probably nothing but always good to call the doc if there is any spotting.

I spotted with the twins at 13 weeks. My doc had me come to the ER to meet her (it was on a sat) and check me out- all was fine (as you can see in  my sig the pg went well!).

try not to worry... brown = ok... even red spotting can be OK... but call the doc just to let them know.

  • Ditto the previous responses -- call and see what they say, if only for reassurance or to get scheduled in for Monday.  Are you using progesterone supps by any chance?  My RE had me on them and I had spotting issues from 7 weeks until I stopped using them.

    Good luck -- I know it's scary!

  • Thanks ladies! I contacted the doc and they told me to just take it easy. Some how all of your responses made me feel better than talking to the on-call though so thanks again :o)

  • Ditto pp -- probably nothing at all, but call for peace of mind.

I also wanted to tell you CONGRATULATIONS!!!  I remember you from TTTC and didn't know you were pg -- how wonderful!

  • It is probably nothing, but I agree you should call the Dr for peace of mind.  Sending lots of good thoughts your way.  Keep us posted.

    Thank you! I appreciate it!

The on-call said to take it easy and drink lots of water and if I was truly worried about an m/c to take a HPT. They said if the bleeding gets heavier or turns red to go to the ER immediately. She seemed a little annoyed that I called so that wasn't too comforting but she did say it sounded like normal spotting and it should be OK. My NT Scan is in 2 weeks and she thought I could wait until then to tell my OB about the spotting. I might call on Monday though just to be safe.

  • I too had some brown spotting earlier in my preganancy, the doctor told me that its old blood that sometimes appears as the uterous is expanding.  I'm sure yours is the same, but would call just for peace of mind.
  • I'm late getting on the bump tonight, but wanted to make sure you were doing ok.  I agree with all the PPs and see that you have already called the on call doc.  I just wanted to chime in with the fact that I also spotted a little earlier on in my pregnancy.  I spotted at 7 wks and again at 8 wks.  Just brown, but it freaked me out.  Hope you're feeling a bit better about the situation.

    Thanks Lindsay!

I'm doing better. The spotting has stopped and I've been taking it easy. I'm still nervous whenever I have to go to the bathroom but I'm trying to keep in mind that spotting is normal. I still plan on calling my OB on Monday though. I'm hoping maybe they'll move up my NT scan or let me come in for another u/s but we'll see! Thanks for chiming in :o)

  • I just wanted to chime in to let you know that I had spotting at 12 weeks that lasted for a couple of days. It was really scary, but I haven't had any spotting since then and our baby looked healthy at our 18-week ultrasound, so that was a big relief to me.

Glad to hear your spotting has stopped!

  • spotted my entire pregnancy obviously DS is fine!  Rule of thumb if you are soaking through a pad or doubled over in pain the spotting is generally normal.
