Ok so my 9 week old is having some breathing issues, for the most part she has had them since she was born but they seem to be getting worse.
The first is while she is eating it sounds like she is drowning. She just can't seem to breathe at all. The doctor suggested keeping her more upright but that seems to make it even worse. Another doctor suggested saline nasal drops which seem to do nothing. It isn't as if she has a runny nose or anything.
Another problem is that she seems to struggle when she is in her car seat (she breathes really, really loud and occasionally gasps for breath or coughs). This can be really scarry for a few minutes and then she will sound fine. She has the same problem when sitting in her little chair that vibrates and rocks. She loves the chair but every once in a while (say every hour or two) she will have a little spell where she gasps for breath and does some coughing and seems to be having A LOT of trouble breathing.
I had thought that these things would get better as she got bigger but they seem to be getting worse! What's going on and what do i do??
Re: baby having breathing issues...
I agree that you might be using a bottle nipple that's to fast. In BFing you can get forceful letdown which causes similar symptoms that i've been dealing with. And i ditto using your aspirator to clean out her nose and mouth if you think there is something back in there you need to get out. Did they teach you how to use in her mouth? I would use it whenever she has a coughing episode. It could also be related to the faster flow if shes getting milk in her sinuses from the fast flow.
Having said that - younger babies don't have a normal breathing patterns so a certain amount of gasps and non-breathing is normal.
Also, my LO has developed this new thing where she makes herself cough as part of her way to start crying.
we do use the slow flow nipples when she takes a bottle... maybe will try the preemie ones and see if that helps. Still don't understand though why she has trouble breathing when sitting somewhat upright (in car seat, baby chair) as this is not related to eating/drinking....
as far as the aspirator yeah we know how to use it but nothing comes out of her nose and when she coughs she isn't coughing anything up....
does anyone else have a LO struggling with the car seat/baby seat?
