For those who have checked a carseat during a flight, did you put it in a trash bag or anything to keep it clean? I am not sure how to keep it from being broken either. It is one of the infant seats.
No bag needed, however last time I didn't need the base b/c my FIL drove it down for us. Do you check/carry the base with the seat? Does it count as an additional item?

I'm not taking the base. I'm going to strap it in the alternate way with a seatbelt.
I was told that I couldn't check it at the gate (Southwest) because I hadn't bought an extra seat?
That doesn't make sense. Gate checking is for things like strollers and carseats or (on smaller flights) traditional carry on bags. It's the stuff that you wait for after the flight at either the arrival gate, or sometimes next to the plane (again, for small planes/airports). Shouldn't have anything to do with how many seats you have. I'd call again. Maybe SW just doesn't gate check period?
I've checked mine at the gate and the ticket counter. When I checked at the ticket counter they wrapped in it a clear plastic bag. When I check it at the gate with my stroller it was no problem. MAKE SURE you have the employees at the gate know you will be checking at the gate so they can give you a tracking number. I have also taken it with me to the gate and if your flight is not full you can take it on the plane free of charge as long as the gate employees ok it. Hope this helps!
