Talk to me about liver platelets. I think that is their worry (or what they are being cautious about right now with me). I looked online and I was reading things that was saying numbers in the thousands but the numbers I have been hearing about are in the hundreds, like 150 being normal..... what is the deal with platelets and what is actually considered "bad"??
Posted on HR as well.
Re: XP: Hellp ladies
I think you're thinking of 2 separate things: liver enzymes (which rise during HELLP) and platelets (which drop during HELLP). High liver enzymes cause your liver to swell, which eventually causes rupture and then death (you will know if your liver is swelling - you won't be able to breathe b/c it will push into your lungs). Low platelets (white cells) cause an issue with your ability to clot (which is why HELLP mamas often need transfusions after delivery).
I don't know details on the numbers though - I just now all of mine were bad (liver was swollen into my lungs and I needed a transfusion after my c/s).
ditto SBM. My platelets never dropped below normal, so I got really luck there.
My stomach actually started hurting REALLY BADLY (that was actually what sent me to the doctor) about 3 days before enzymes were elevated above normal.
I don't know what normal is or even what mine were. I just know that I started having bad pain on Tuesday, was heaving up stomach acid on Wednesday, and then Thursday I went to the doc. When I was admitted about noon that day, my levels were at the high end of normal, they crossed into abnormal (but apparently not by a lot) about 12 hours later.
I share all this to say that if your liver is swelling- you'll know.
My Blog
The platelets are a problem when they are below 100. Major risk is severe bleeding.
I had a different experience on it being obvious that something is wrong with your liver. Mine was failing, and I had absolutely no pain. You might not know that something is wrong with your liver, the only way I knew was the blood tests that the doctors ran. If you have the pain, something is definitely wrong, but no pain does not necessarily mean all is well.
When I was admitted, I had super high BP, lots of swelling, and generally felt like death warmed over. I didn't have any of the other symptoms.
Thanks guys. I do not have the URQ pain that I have heard so much about (the one I hear I would KNOW if I had). I had blood work on Monday and my platelets were were 172 so they let me go home - 72 hours later, they were 145 (which was just below the 150 normal) but she said they would watch closely since they made that drop so quickly... I know my liver enzymes were very elevated when I had pre-e with my DS but no one has mentioned that that is a concern right now... My BP is crazy good....
I was admitted yesterday because of the protein in my urine and the drop of platelets.
Had severe pre-e and emerg c/s at 27 wks with DS. Thanks for your insights.
Are you in the hospital now, I know you have been on BR for quite some time (I frequent the HR board and enjoy reading the BR check-in).
My BP was good while I was having the pain (I was actaully having URQ pain for about 2 weeks when I walked, but terrible OB told me it was nothing) and my labs didn't come back with HELLP until 2 days after I was admitted, even though I had been complaining that something was terribly wrong with me.
Once they brought the Peri in on my case she started testing my "uric acid" bc she said that is a good indicator that things are going bad, even when other labs are showing things are normal. Good luck, at least your in the best place you can possibly be, and you have made it longer (that is a dream of mine for next time!)
yes, they admitted me yesterday. I have had no URQ, I had some twinges of pain but not like I expect it will be if it is the real deal URQ.... these were shooting pains, almost more like in my boob.... thinking maybe it is just some weird pregnancy breast pain....
but she seemed concerned about the "drastic" change in only 72 hours - in the platelet levels and I did not know any details about platelet counts and all that business...
Thanks for the info and following my saga!
