At Rory's preschool, they celebrate the kids' birthdays, and we send an inexpensive gift for them. There are three in the next week, and I am always at such a loss as to what to give.
For girls, my DD loves her ponies, my little pony. You can get one for about $5. Boys like those cars you shake and they go, I think they are $11, but you could probably find them at walmart for under $10.
Target has Winnie the Pooh Uno for $5. We just got it for ds and he loves it. My son is a few months younger than your daughter so I am assuming the kids having birthdays in her class are turning either 3 or 4 so it is age appropriate.

Can I really be the only one who think this stinks. I am all for celebrating birthdays with song, some cake, and ice cream...but presents for pre-school "friends" I would hate that. How many kids are there? What happens if she is invited to their real party? oohh...
But to answer your question, play-doh, arts and crafts kits, and anything on clearance at target or a craft store and keep it in a "gift drawer".
totally understand the pang in the wallet, the bdays are getting outta hand...
just got back from target & all the back to school stuff is on clearance got a $7 backpack then filled it with $1 scissors, $.59 notepad, $1.50 markers $1 gluestick and this was for a 3 year old she'll eventually use it all I figure & it didn't break the bank.
Re: What's the coolest $5-$10 thing your kid has?
See, that's the problem. We've already done those. I feel like I am out of ideas.
For Miles's class last year I made
Crayon holders (only 4 slots) and a pack of crayons!
Sticker books!
Little dollar bin pails full of fun little things and wrote their name on the outside!
oh super cute- I love that idea!
