DS is a former FTT baby with reflux, delayed gastric emptying and milk, soy, egg allergies. Since starting to crawl and cruise his weight gain has stalled and at todays GI weight check he was the exact same weight as last month (17 lbs 15 ounces). He is allergic to soy, milk and eggs which is limiting us in our options because I feel like every recipe or product I find contains at least one of those ingredients. A typical day for him is 12 ounces of neocate mixed to 30 cals/ounce, cheerios, sweet potatoes, peas mixed with olive oil and duocal, chicken or turkey mixed with bbq sauce and duocal and a 260 calorie/10 ounce smoothie that consist of coconut milk, coconut milk yogurt, 2 scoops of duocal, and either mangos or bananas (sometimes he drinks the entire thing, but most times we get about 6 ounces into him). He won't touch coconut milk or the yogurt on their own and he refuses to eat avocado. Does anyone have any suggestions for other foods I can add? We're seeing the nutritionist in two weeks, but she's clueless so we're going to have to figure this out on our own.
TIA!
Re: Need weight gain tips for milk, soy and egg free DS
We are fighting a lot of the same battles. We found a cookbook on Amazon "whole foods cookbook" I am not sure of the authors name, but I can let you later when I get home.
There are a TON of recipes and non of them involve the top 8 allergens. For eggs, they reccomend Ener-gee egg replacer. It is a powder you add water to, and it acts like eggs in recipes. You can't make scrambled eggs, but it helps to make pancakes, biscuits, etc.
We rely heavily on the Elecare, as we have very few foods he can eat, but I can make him turkey meatloaf, which he loves and throw in the things that have calories that beef it up a bit.
If he will eat chicken you can make your own nuggets. Strips of chicken, roll in baby sweet potato and something for crunch, like crunched up corn flakes, kix (corn is ok, but he can't have wheat) and you can put the duocal powder or olive oil in it too.
we still use a lot of baby food because Ben is still learning to eat, but I will mix the pears into things to change it up a bit. He wont eat pears alone, but if I mix it with sweet potatoes, it changes it enough, that the flavor is different and he doesn't get so bored.
If he likes to feed himself, we make a few different versions of sweet potato, cut into strips with olive oil for fries, or tiny pieces and then bake we call them sweet potato bites, but it is a food he can feed himself which helps.
I am sure there are more things, I will come back later when I think of them.
If you could let me know the name of the cookbook I would appreciate it. We do a ton of sweet potatos every week. I found a recipe for chicken nuggets with spinach in them so I may try that next weekend. He seems to like smoothies and bananas so tomorrow I am making a avocado-banana smoothie that I found on weedelicious.com. Fingers crossed he likes it!
