Shower question and a little bit of a vent

Okay, I have been debating about posting this for a couple of weeks so please no flames. As of right now, I am not having any showers. I had 3 bridal showers and this is our first so it seems a little strange to me and I can't help but feel a little hurt. My family is usually big on celebrating this kind of thing. For my cousin's bridal shower they even did a "mail shower" where we all basically just sent gifts because most of us live in MN and she lives in WA and they didn't want her to feel left out. The women where I work also throw a lot of showers and have seemed very excited about this pregnancy. I have a good friend who offered to throw me a shower, but she really can't swing it financially so she would like to have a co-hostess. Since no one else has offered, I don't know what to tell her, and I don't want her to try to take it on herself. Don't get me wrong, I really honestly don't care about the presents (although, of course, with a tight budget, any help is nice), mostly I just feel like this event which is such a huge deal for us, is kind of being passed over by our friends and family. Alright, pity party/vent over. On to my real question:

Up to now I have avoided buying too much for the baby, because we are team green until D-day and I wanted there to be plenty of options for people since neutral clothing, blanket, etc. options are limited and that way we would hopefully get a lot of stuff that we can really use. At what point do I just assume there will be no showers and start buying all the things that we will need right away for the baby?

Re: Shower question and a little bit of a vent

  • someone should throw you a shower!!! you could politely mention to your friend that no one has offered to help and see what her response is. honestly, baby showers dont have to be expensive. you dont have to have food, you can just have cake and punch and a few decorations over at her house or your house. but i think after 30 weeks i would assume no one was throwing me a shower, so you still have time!

  • I would maybe buy the things at a store with a good return policy and then keep the reciepts.  My shower isn't until about 33 weeks.

  • nobody has mentioned a shower to me either, but I'm sure I'll be having one... if not I'll just ask my mom to throw it! haha! :)

  • How about a pot-luck shower? Everyone brings a gift and a food dish or drinks? There are a lot of fun baby games too that don't cost much, or you can use what you have laying around the house. The toilet paper thing? Where they guess how many squares it takes to wrap around your body. You don't have to have money and fancy decorations to throw an amazing baby shower. I think it's about knowing your friends are there for you for the most part. :) Good luck!

Just had a thought! What about getting everyone together one Saturday morning and going garage sale-ing?? That's always fun!

  • Could it maybe be a surprise, or they just haven't gotten around to planning it yet?

This is a possibility. My brother's couples bridal shower is in a couple weeks. I guess I will wait and see if anyone says anything then.

  • Seriously I don't get it... its not a rule that other people have to throw you a shower.  Girl go ahead and plan your own baby shower --- who cares!!! I'm planning my own baby shower, no one will do it better than me, so I'm doing it myself with hubby, of course my friends and family have offer to help and they will be involved but from day 1 I decided I was planning my own baby shower.

Also, maybe its just a surprise baby shower???!

Since you are on a budget try to be creative with location, decoration and food.  Do some research there are tons of ideas out there.

    Good Luck!

Do you think it is really a bridal shower?????  Maybe your friends and family are AWESOME secret keepers?

Personally, I have no problem with ppl planning and paying for their own shower...But be forewarned that if you go to the baby shower board you will be drawn and quartered....lol

The traditional etiquette that many people have is that this is taboo and that it somewhat signals a gift grabber...I think it signals someone who likes to have parties....I would SOOO rather host a bbq that has a cake about baby and no gifts than have the shower drama I've had with IL's....but oh well...

As far as waiting on the purchasing of big items...I've made a very clear choice for myself that I will be buying the furniture (that way I can set it up when I want to).  We registered for the rest and if the shower falls through like I think its going to now, we will be buying off our own registry ;) lol

GL!  You have lots of time before I'd knock the idea of a shower at all though.  Would your family be planning something for around the holidays when everyone is there?  I have heard a few ppl doing it that way although many avoiding the holiday hubub...

  • this makes me sad. is there any chance someone is planning a suprise shower? Even if you dont have a shower I bet people will get you stuff even if it's after LO arrives. I'd be a little up set my self if no one was doing one for me.

Good luck, hopefully someone throws you one.

    This! =)

  • I've already assumed I won't be getting a shower. ?We're moving across the country in less than two months and none of my friends have said anything about throwing me one. ?I won't know anyone where we're moving. We might see our family at Thanksgiving and Christmas but both sides of our family is small (less than 10 people). ?I've given up hope.

    I didn't have a wedding shower either.?
