Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Toddler Shoes - especially for boys

We have yet to really put our son in shoes.  We had some summer sandles for him but he walked really funny in them and we tended to forget them every time we left the house anyway.  But now it's going to become cooler and we want his feet to stay dry and cut- and fungus-free so we need some toddler shoes.

What is up with the selection of boy shoes?!?!  The girl section is about 4 aisles with multiples colors and styles (sandles, boots, mary janes, athletic) whereas the boy section has 5-6 pair to choose from.  And I always think they look way too bulky and stiff.

I love the look and comfort factor of Robeez but they are so expensive.  If I can get them on sale, are they worth it?  I know there may be a growth spurt but he's a pretty slow grower so I think I'd get the entire fall and winter out of one or two pair.

Where do you buy your toddler's shoes?  I've looked mostly at Target/Meijer type stores and haven't liked the minimal selection they have.

  • I think good shoes are important especially for the first pairs, so I'd suggest Stride Rite. Yes, they are more than something you'd find at Target, but worth it imo, esp. if you can get them on sale. I know some disagree though. You want something flexible that moves w/ their feet, not something stiff. See Kai Runs are also very soft and still protective enough for outdoors. We used those last spring, now DW wears Stride Rite.

  • I am going through the same thing.  I attempted to buy him some sneakers today and it was a big FAIL!  He always pulls his shoes off, so I am also looking for something that will stay on a little better.  I went to Stride Right, I am NOT paying $50 for shoes that he is gonna pull off in 5 min (I did have Stride Right size him tho!).  I went to Foot Locker.  They had really cute sneakers:  Nikes, Addidas, etc, but also, a bit expensive.  Finally, I went to Models and saw a cute pair of Nikes for 19.99.  They did not have DS' size tho.  I am going to check out Famous Footwear.  Let me know if you find anything that works!  GL!

  • I've bought most of DS's shoes from Target. And yes, the boys' selection is sh_tty. Always. I'm going to suck it up and go to Stride Rite this weekend. DS has really fat little feet and I have a lot of trouble finding shoes that I can squeeze his feet in.

  • I get my boy shoes at Payless. I usually try to see how flexible they are by bending them before I select a pair. But they have a pretty good selection and the price is right, especially if they're having a sale.  Also, since your boy isn't used to them for sure start with something with really soft soles like See Kai Run. They're pricey so get a used pair or something off of Ebay.
  • We've gotten ours from Stride Rite but mostly b/c DS has really fat feet and those are the only shoes that fit him. I don't think Robeez have enough support for walkers.
  • DS wears stride rite and I love them, they hold up great even after washing a few times.  I like that they have Wide for ds little fat feet.  I usually order them online at the cheapest place I can find them.

  • I looked at the discount shoes, but we really liked the quality of Stride Rite. They size them big enough so your LO can walk and wear them for "awhile." They are sturdy and give him great support. We have the velcro straps and it has not been an issue. Plus, DS has wide feet so these are fit for him.

  • I loved Pedipeds but they're not the best for walking outside since the sole is just thin leather. Maybe once he's walking you could try Stride Rite? That's what we did after Pedipeds, and when he was ready to walk outside in the cold muddy March.
