i can't keep holding DS until he falls asleep! he only does this for naps. his new favorite thing is to act like a newborn & wake up when i lay him down
We're struggling with this as well. We did a modified Ferber for bedtime and that ended up working out well for us, but if I let him CIO for naps he cries for much longer and will only sleep for 20-30 minutes. It's so frustrating... right now he will pretty much only nap in the car or in our bed with me. What am I supposed to do when the baby comes??? Let me know if you find a solution!!!
DD started this about 2 weeks ago and it was getting a bit ridiculous. She would go down for about 45 minutes and then she would wake up screaming and not go back to sleep but as soon as I would pick her up and snuggle she would fall asleep for another hour and a half. So the last few days we have stayed home and been working on it. She fussed for almost an hour the first day, yesterday was 20 minutes and today was five. She is still waking up after about 45 minutes but she fusses for about five minutes and puts herself back to sleep. It seems to be working but I guess I am going to have to be strict about her nap time til she gets it down.
Does he have a lovey? DD loves hers. that seemed to help alot.
Did he just start doing this? I thought he slept pretty well.
he has a paci, blankie, and bear, and if i try to let him CIO for a nap, they all end up on the floor.
he normally does sleep well, and yes he just started doing this.
Exactly our situation. I actually tied her binkie to the side of her crib so it would stay there and not give me an excuse to go in there. How ridiculous is that!

From what I read, having a wakeful period after 45 minutes of a nap is normal- but that is good that she is starting to put herself back to sleep. This is just like at night after a few hours.
Ferber at night went very well. Ferber for naps was a PITA. She just hated it. I stuck to my guns, though, for two weeks. I noticed that if she fell asleep at all, it would usually be between 30-40 minutes after going ton her crib. So, if she hadn't gotten to sleep after 45 minutes, I called off the nap. I had to grit my teeth and smile and play with her while we were both exhausted from no nap, but after those two weeks, she settled into a routine that has been working ever since.
It helps to have a lot of cues to let her know what's coming: tell her to go pick out a story, give her a pacifier, turn on the fan, read the story, put the story back, ask for her pacifier back and put that up in the same place every time, sing her a song, etc. It's like a 10-step process for us, but she accepts the end result better, I think.

it took DD much longer for naptime. But we followed the Ferber method for naps and bedtime, and now she does great.
Nighttime took about 4 days for not a peep success.
Naps took about 3 weeks.
He'll get there. Be persistent.
